Cant stand it! How folks conflate the words "devastate" and "decimate".

If a Roman legion showed cowardice in battle they would take a random every tenth guy in the legion, and...execute him public! Kill ten percent would be put to death. Hence the "deci" part.

So if a large minority of humans are killed (or by extension 'taken out of action') then its 'decimation'. If a tenth of the faculty of a school is bedridden from the flu then you could say "the faculty is decimated". Less than half are taken out, but there are visible gaps in the ranks so to speak.

But in the news you sometime hear how "the hurricane decimated this building!". A physical thing like a building cant be "decimated". But if its reduced to rubble then it would certainly be "devastated".
