I don't get how many people on WP manage go for a walk in nature without getting raped, mugged or stabbed. Where I come from it's advisable not to walk alone in beautiful nature places because that's where such crimes are more likely to happen.

Maybe it's a UK thing.

My son was stabbed in the city in a very crowded place. SA happened at various homes. I walk my dog in the woods past midnight because agoraphobia. Good luck to anyone who tries to touch me. I've never seen another person there at that time anyway.

Violent crimes, like rape, are more likely to happen where there are more people. There’s a much greater risk of bad stuff like that happening to you in cities. Victims are much easier to find. It wouldn’t be that efficient of predators to hang out in the woods hoping that a person comes along. This seems to be the case everywhere. Bad experiences that I’ve had did not happen in the woods.

There is a nature place away from passersby that I used to walk when I had a big ol German Shepherd. Now that she's passed on I don't walk there anymore.

Well usually predators who want to get away with it don't choose to commit crimes in broad daylight where there are lots of people about, because they are bound to be caught right away. Where I come from people usually find quieter places to deal drugs, and others who are up to no good tend to lurk about in woods and places where nobody can see them. Usually murderers and rapists have no lives and so are usually seen lurking about in quiet areas.
Not saying murders and rapes don't happen in busy cities, because they do, but in places like Essex it is usually warned to the public not to walk out alone in quiet places. There are more likely to be witnesses in cities, and you're more likely to get saved or go somewhere for help or whatever.

Again, it's one of those things that get American-splained, because in the UK (particularly the East and South) people are more vulnerable to it in rural areas and after dark.

^^ Actually, in the UK, similarly to other locales, most rapes don’t occur in the woods. People are not “American-splaining.” They are describing reality.

Quote:
For the years ending March 2017 and March 2020 combined, the most common location for rape or assault by penetration to occur was in the victim’s home (37%), followed by the perpetrator’s home (26%). The assault had taken place in a park, other open public space, car park or on the street for 9% of victims (Appendix Table 8 ).

I wonder if it’s because so many horror movies have someone in a rural area getting chased by someone with a chainsaw , axe,etc..?

I think it’s quite possible. A lot of people feel uncomfortable with solitude as well which probably doesn’t help.

Drugs are legal here so there's more chance of people growing and dealing in their own homes, or waiting for it to be delivered at the door. They're not going to go standing in the dark in the woods without a light on their phone or something to make them detectable. Obviously I"m not advocating that everyone go prance around in the dark but if you have a dog and appropriate safeguards and you stick to a well used footpath it's much safer than you'd realise. There's more people there in the daytime like college kids walking home or families going for a stroll. That's why I prefer night. My biggest worry is about other animals.

Then how come when I was at school they were always advising children not to walk home alone through the woods or across fields because of vulnerability? Walking the street way home felt much safer.

Because if you need help, there's more chance of people being around to help you or see if something goes wrong. I'm not saying woods are always safer or that everyone should walk in the dark, but I have scopophobia and daylight walking would be hell for me. People always know where I am when I go out at night and they can track me. I have GPS on my dog and also on my phone. I keep my emergency alert open on my phone too.

If you're a grade school kid a grown up bad guy could do bad stuff to you in the woods and not be seen.

You could get hurt in the woods or fields and not be able to get help and your parents wouldn’t know where to look.
My ex fell down an abandoned dry well exploring the woods with his brother.
He was lucky someone was there to go get help or no one would have known what happened.
Kids shouldn’t be wandering off alone.
Not all danger is from people.

Forgot to add it's whoop-ass cold out there most of the time too.
In winter it's like -20.
Most people don't hang around hoping to freeze their nuts off in an attack.
There's only about two months of the year I don't need a winter coat.

/\Not to mention what the cold does to certain male body parts.
Not much outdoor raping in that kind of climate.
