A casserole of pasta, pilchards (filleted sardines*, no bones etc.), mushrooms, onions, chives, garlic, black and red pepper, cheddar cheese with a bit of provolone for tang, and cream.

Used to make this all the time, 35 years ago. Reasonably priced sardine fillets vanished around then - at least I couldn't find them - until fairly recently.

Just as good as I remembered. Great winter food.

*kinda sorta. Very tasty, mild flavored fish. See here: http://luckystar.co.za/six-things-you-n ... pilchards/

Green pea soup with bread. (A thick soup made with green peas, union, leek, winter carrot, rooted celery, smoked fat bacon, pigs foot and smoked sausage, that is traditionally eaten in winter in the Netherlands.)

A seriously stuffed ham&swiss on whole wheat with dill pickles and hot mustard, and thick split pea soup made with whole milk.
