This may not make sense to the WP audience, but for many people phones seem like evil goblins programmed to always do the most illogical thing possible and determined to thwart all your intentions and keep you perpetually enraged.

For me it makes. Even "de-Googled", Android is still a quasi-stable (terribly) bloated anomaly made to beat the crap outta nerves. From lifeless visual design thru crappy way of working to over-engineered internals, it's a software engineering disaster. iOS OTOH is a literal prison.

Many times I've cried because my phone refused to behave itself, and once I had to lock it in a drawer for three days to avoid physically destroying it.

May I not cried because of it, but definitely they make me violently hit / throw them pretty often - And for few years already I use them for *only* basic tasks. Somehow never made a scratch on them, but if I daily-drived one then surely I'd have to change them once a month due to damage I would deal 'em, heh...
Worst phone I ever had was Huawei P20. If it wasn't pretty valuable at the time when I switched to OnePlus with LineageOS, I would basically rip it apart.
Right now I'm on a Pixel with so-called "hardened" Android (GrapheneOS), but it still sucks too much. I'm thinking to switch to a dumbphone once again and just keep that stupid s**t just for Whatsapp ('cause of which I had to return to Android).

I have at least once lost my temper with a computer and inflicted severe injuries on it. And that's from someone who grew up with these things.

At least on average computer, unlike "smart"phones, you can switch OS. I trashed W11 for Linux Mint back in '22 and never looked back (Windows 10 (and then 11) made me consider stop using computers at all). Since then, for various reasons, went thru LMDE, Debian, Devuan, now on FreeBSD. There is choice, luckily.

^I don't understand a word of that and that's most of the problem. Most people don't have the time to become experts on computers, but you have to be an expert on computers to be able to interact with them at all.

^ You don't have to be expert to use one, but it of course depends on what system it runs. Some Linux distributions like Linux Mint were made really straightforward to install and use by someone with no prior experience (I wasn't IT lover back then and mine expertise ended on formatting a USB drive from file explorer). It also doesn't get into way too much and try to rule you, unlike current-day Windows or Android or whatever.

It's true though that computers aren't as easy as appliances like kettle or oven and it's common misconception computers are such appliance. It's rather like a car; You have to learn a bit to drive it and then to keep it in good shape.

I guess these?:
"hardened" - security-oriented, made more resilient to attacks / backdoors etc.
"dumbphone" - feature phone or just simple keyboard phone like Nokia was known for.
