there was a news item that was about a person who was hit by a car, and they said he had a broken collar bone, and a broken pelvis as well as "internal injuries".

collar bones and pelvis's are internal are they not?

Internal injuries usually means major organs and other blood vessels, rather than the skeletal system.

well "internal injuries" should mean "internal injuries".
i have heard in the past that people have suffered brain injuries and internal injuries.
brains are internal, and they are a major organ (in some people).

i do not listen to much outside my head, and so i am not as educated as you are about the default meanings that are the standards of public recognition.
