It's usually the Americas that are called the West. This is because we live in a Eurocentric world. The Americas are to the west of Europe, and Asia is to the east. I thought Griffins were more like lions with wings. Not that I'm knowledgeable in mythology, but that thing has a beak! Please correct my misconception, and please don't allow me to diminish your enjoyment of it.
