Snow is forecast for the weekend, and only the oaks are still holding their leaves, so this message is the official and traditional closing of this thread for the year. As long as we stay in orbit, it will come around again next fall.

Reluctance

By Robert Frost

Out through the fields and the woods
And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
And lo, it is ended.

The leaves are all dead on the ground,
Save those that the oak is keeping
To ravel them one by one
And let them go scraping and creeping
Out over the crusted snow,
When others are sleeping.

And the dead leaves lie huddled and still,
No longer blown hither and thither;
The last lone aster is gone;
The flowers of the witch hazel wither;
The heart is still aching to seek,
But the feet question ‘Whither?’

Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?

The calendar still says August, but the nighthawks in the evening sky know that autumn is on the way.

Stumbling around in the dark to get home from a nice country walk because I'd forgotten that the nights are drawing in.

The blueberries and most of the wild raspberries are much over ripe. No more picking berries for this year.

We have two big bowls of apples picked straight from the tree in the kitchen table, and they smell so good. Also, cinnamon scented candles definitely smell like autumn.

Most of the women on the beaches here in sunny southern California have switched from bikinis to one-piece bathing suits.

The local crows are beginning to return to their fall/winter roosting site every evening now.

It's almost completely dark by the time I'm done with my horseback riding lessons (~8 PM).

Lots of rain/storms the past couple weeks.

I'm getting migraines fairly frequently from the pressure changes that are coming with the aforementioned precipitation.

The rain and somewhat cooler temperatures are making our lawn grow very quickly. My dad mowed it last Saturday, and it's been badly in need of another mowing for a few days now, but it's been too wet to mow.

The same conditions mean toads are coming out when I take my dog for his evening walk.

Don't know what kind of trees they are, but the leaves on the ones all over the downtown area are turning red. Lots more leaves on the ground on trails. It's supposed to be overcast the next several days.
