Definitely 100% NOT! It's an online party.

I heard this statement for the first time and became interested in it. Face to face communication scares me, maybe I can get involved and enjoy it

Ah right, Jakki, I get the message loud and clear. I'm supposed to meekly take criticism and not react to it, however much it hurts me.

I'm not looking forward to Christmas this year, I hoped to cheer myself and everyone else up with a party but why bother.

Not criticism of ""YOU"" but your criticism of others and I was merely offering advise on getting more attendees..
possibly by changing choices of words .
but am sorry if it felt as criticism... Either way hope you have a blessed and Merry One yourself , when it arrives.
Hope your day goes better ....today.

Gosh talk about putting a damper on things Goldfish! You don't have to come to this party on WP. Feel free to scroll on past the thread, jeez!

Real parties full of thousands of people sound like my idea of hell, I'm very happy to avoid those

Here I am trying to do something nice for people on WP and naysayers like Goldfish turn up to sneer and pour cold water on nice ideas and insult everyone on the WP site. Unbelievable.

Believe it. 8)

You asked:

What do people think about holding an online party?

Many years ago I used to be on forums like this and we often had online parties. We would pretend to eat, drink, dance, whatever. It was a lot less stressful than going out in real life to a party, obviously.

Should we hold an online Christmas party? And in which forum?

If anyone is thinking 'what's the point?' It is just to be silly, have fun and maybe get to know each other better. No arguments or political discussions allowed!

I answered:

I attended an Actual online party during peak Covidtimes. It was a decentralized gay rave of sorts. Webcams on Zoom. Some people had their rooms decorated with lights and lasers and things and wore crazy costumes. There were a few different DJ's playing music from their rooms wherever they were in the world. The party promoter friend had thrown parties in Canada, USA, Mexico etc so there were people from at least 3 countries on the Zoom party. It was kinda neat since it was a new/different format to check out, chat with people, listen to music, watch some people dancing etc.

But overall in the grand scheme of parties.. online parties suck compared to REAL parties where hundreds, or even thousands, of people get together in a club or warehouse space, get intoxicated, dance, stay up until 2-7am whenever the party ends depending on how legal it is and if/when the police come to shut it down. :D

But online parties I guess have a small place in the world for when you just don't want to be around people At All but feel like "sharing a drink," with others over the holidays/nye or whatever. I'd guess most of the people on this forum would way rather do their anti-social socializing online like that than wear some funky costume to a rave or kink party. Probably have much higher attendance from people on the spectrum/socially anxious people vs. NT crowd who only ever delved into an online party once or twice during the pandemic and couldn't wait to get back to music festivals.

I don't really need a party as an excuse to have a drink and post about it, though. That's what the alcoholics thread is for. :p

That's what I think about it. Online parties have their place for the anti-social & socially anxious, but will never replace the vibe & magic of a REAL banger of a party. I've gone to a bunch of massive parties, a couple multi-day music festivals, worked at a couple dozen parties etc. There are also times - extended times - I'm not interested in going to parties so I don't go. Hell, there was a NYE party *in my house* that I skipped once because I wasn't up for it. People thought I wasn't home; meanwhile I stayed in my room and avoided everyone.

So, there ya go. They're no replacement for REAL parties. If they were, party spaces, night clubs, banquet halls etc would have all completely ceased to exist after covid lockdowns and people would have opted for virtual events only. BUT, as I said, they have their place for people who cannot/will not/don't want to etc attend a big party in real life. Simple as that - because that's what I think.

^^You expressed your opinion but maybe also try to think about how your words might affect someone else. If an online party is not for you, that's fine. Not everyone has to participate if they don't want to. But if someone is trying to do something nice for the WP community, maybe be supportive? Or maybe just don't say anything if you don't like the idea?

No disrespect to you or anyone else. I just don't like to see anyone get upset when it could be avoided, or, at this point, when it could be mended rather than doubling down on it.

virtual parties have their advantages esp. here in the bible belt. no exposure to aerosolized nasty little hummers. one can dress how one likes, or even not dress. one can eat one's truly own choice of food and drink. one can listen to one's truly own choice of xmas soundtrack. one can set one's own thermostat to a temperature comfy for them, not too cold and not too warm. let me count the other ways... :santa:

I've seen some small anime forums play some pre-made hobby-related videos at gatherings, and that was fun. Maybe we can try this, although I don't have enough technical skills.
