I know I've repeated this to the point of exhaustion, but sometimes I think my point has not been made. I don't trust certain people.

Most legless lizards belong to the family Anguidae, which also includes alligator lizards. Only two anguid legless lizards are endemic to Europe: the slow worm and the giant Russian glass lizard AKA European legless lizard. The latter actually has two externally visible legs, but they are only 2 mm long. Morphologically, these animals combine typical lizard characteristics (fixed jaw, eyelids, external ears, caudal autonomy, etc.) with typical snake characteristics (legless locomotion, burrowing, slower metabolism, etc.) and unique, adaptive characteristics such as a lateral groove that helps the animal to expand during digestion of large prey. North America is home to a greater number of anguid legless lizard species, commonly known as glass lizards. Although snakes evolved more recently than lizards, legless lizards are not "missing links". Instead, they represent an example of convergent evolution. Snakes are believed to have evolved from a different lizard family, Varanidae, the monitor lizards.
