^^I tried that but it didn't work. Does it only work on metal caps? The cap was plastic with ridges along the edges, which of course made opening more painful.

Maybe try rubber glove, with ridges for grip?
Or you could do what my sister did, which was go down to the lobby and ask a handsome stranger to help her. He did.

After returning home from volunteering, I was horrified to discover that the new resident in my home had left the taps running in the bathtub. Consequently, the floor was soaked and water was trickling down into the kitchen and communal area on the floor below. I turned off the tap and unplugged the plug, but I can't honestly fathom why he didn't do it himself. Furthermore, in spite of a strict 'no smoking' rule, he had obviously been smoking non-stop in the night as there were cigarette butts in the sink, on the floor and in the fireplace.

Subsequently, I decided to return to my mother's because I couldn't face confronting him. But even that now seems like a bad idea as she is chastising me for practically everything I do. I can't even breathe without her looking down on me.

Under no circumstances do I want to spend the night with an inconsiderate chain-smoking ex-mental health patient - yet I am not sure he's anymore insufferable than my mother.

I am rather screwed wherever I live.
