You're in the "normal" zone.

I'm sure I sounded like a real country bumpkin when I first moved to Austin from my home town. Now I don't sound that way so much, but if you were to listen to a recording of my friend and I, you could tell we came from the same place originally.

My accent simplifies everything, whenever possible. We don't pronounce alot of words completely if we don't have to. The closer the friend, the shorter the words.

I wonder if mumbling and calling just about every known item a "what's it called" or a "that thing" can be considered my partner's accent.

I would definitely consider this type of "mumbling" an accent. The rest, although relevant, might be overlooked because the "mumbling" is proof enough.

A while back a friend said I did a good voice impression of a Chinese saleswoman I had to talk to on the phone about my cell phone service. I told her my internet wasn't working. She said I could buy intanet suvice fo nine dolla. Hey at least she didn't say I could buy that thing and 700 whachamacallits for a low price. Not quite as confusing.

Well everyone has an accent, the thing that gets me is that people tend to have different accents to the movies. If you see any Ausie films you often notice that they have accents like in, I wont say Crocodile dundee as that is all fake, but more like percila queen of the desert, or even if you watch a bit of Boy Town. Most anoying accent is that American one, sorry but it realy gets on my nerves for some reason, or even when an ausie accent mixes with an american. We always seem to make fun of an english accent too, but know I tend to try and stop that.

Actually the sad thing is I had to call my cell phone company to tell them the internet wasn't working. That's when I got the girl on the phone who wouldn't stop fiddling with her computer and listen, and she offered to sell me the internet which I said was broken. THen she offered me a bigger package with videos and stuff. I said it was still not working. this went on for about half an hour.

Most people speak with what is around them, so to you it sounds like no accent, it is what is normal, but to others they might pick something up, the closest there is to no accent is if you spoke like a machine. Everyone has a different basis and you will speak what you have learnt to be the right accent.

I'm not used to conversing, and I like to keep conversations short and to the point. I am learning though. :)
