ahh.
getting those wires through the firewall and into the engine bay...huge pain in the ass. i wanted to avoid having to drill through the whole thing, but oddly enough that's exactly what i went for to begin with...i am honestly glad that was foiled now, as the metal was far too beefy there and despie having made many visual check, i'm pretty sure i would have damaged part of the brake booster.
that was an exposed metal part, the rest was surrounded by a rubber. i'm pretty sure that the clutch pedal would have been attached to that, had it not been an automatic, so i may have also damaged some vital (but unused??) parts if i did drill successfully.
option two is using an existing firewall grommet, and after poking around youtube i did one. i saw an orange thing before when i was poking around before my drilling attempt, but i had no idea it was a grommet...about 11 or so wires strung through it, with room for more and soft enough to poke through if not. they eventually come out in the engine bay, but first they come out right behind a panel in the front left wheel well, before sprouting through a second hole to end up there. i may have to remove that panel partially for unfettered access. then it's a matter of grounding, splicing into the appropriate tach signaling wire and drawing power from the fuses. fuse taps?? don't want to fry my system...
oh well. today i at least managed to find a way to string all the wires under/through the steering column cover, that much was satisfying.
