oooh. the tortoise is so beautiful, and the gecko and the albino snake. i love "strange" animals. had an iguana as a child and many small Carolina Anoles (they change color and are often called "chameleons" but aren't.)

i also had a pet rat when in college. she was smart and playful. she used to follow me around the apartment and ambush my feet. some researchers now believe that the high staccato sound rats make when playing is actually a form of laughter.

oh, right--crabs. they are fascinating, aren't they--really ancient! i forgot that i had some pet hermit crabs too. they were really cute--eyes on stalks, always looking kind of surprised. it was interesting to watch them change shells. sometimes they would "try one on" and reject it.

i think spiders are really pretty too. all spindly and graceful. and their webs are so amazing!

I('d love to have a ball python as a pet and later upgrade to an albino Burmese python when I have more experience, but my parents won't let me have a snake no matter how many times I try to convince them. They won't let me have a tarantula as a pet either.

I think it's fairly common for Aspies to like unusual animals. I sure have that fixation. Unfortunately they're illegal here...

Watching Mozart and the Whale, both characters had a bunch of unusual animals... So i figured that animals might be a common obsession for a lot of Aspies. Where do you live? I think most places yu can get a permit or something. Here, they're trying to pass laws for large constrictors and such... But hopefully, if they do, i'll be grandfathered in.

I live in Norway (northern Europe). In the 1970's a law was passed called the exotic animal protction law. Which basically means that when animals like reptiles are found with someone without permit, they are killed, regardless of how they are treated. Yeah, that's protection Norwegian style! Barbarians, all of them!

Occasionally someone comes up with the idea of allowing some reptiles at least, but our damn authorities always comes up with some airhead reason for not allowing them. Like the impact on nature if they are released and make it in the wild. (Unlike dogs and cats and several others). Or that they're too hard to keep. I've read a lot on the subject; it doesn't seem hard at all. Or that salmonell cases will rise. No, they won't if you're able to wash your hands. But maybe we are that much dumber than the rest of the world? Their last idea was to simply put up a list and the few animals on it would be allowed, all else illegal. They didn't see any reason why a softening of the ban was needed, thinking too many were allowed as it is. Now they might even make rodents and birds illegal as pets. I wish I had a way to leave this dictatorship! :wall:
Sorry, needed to rant.

The worst part is that not everyone abides by the law, and it is believed that there are tens of thousands of illegal reptiles in the country; which means that these animals will not get medical help if they become ill, since their owners know they will be killed if the vet they go to abides by the law.

Yes, there are a few people who have gotten a permit, but they are extremely conservative about it and very few get one. Being an animal lover as well as astmatic and allergic (like me) isn't enough. :x

I wish we had joined EU in 1994, then they would have to lift the ban.

Kasanova: Your tortoise is beautiful, I wanted one just like that. And a gecko. And a slider. If only....
