When I was younger in a small pool in the shallow end, I'm not sure what happened, but nobody came to my aid, it was help myself or die. I never went back in again. It may have only been a split second but it felt longer.
This would have been when I was around 6-10 years old maybe.. The pool is still there, just when I last saw it, it was empty. and still the same as it had always been

Being in the deep part of the wave pool at West Edmonton Mall, and ending up under somebody's tube, then going another direction, and kinda getting mowed over by another tube along with the big waves not helping..after a few times of being run over by various tubes and getting pummelled by waves, I was finally able to get to a shallower part and get some air....my nostrils and sinuses got water in them though.

I learned to swim when I was 8 or 9 and at the age of 9, was able to swim in the deep end without a lifejacket or floaties...I was in regular swimming lessons. The school had them as part of their PE curriculum at the time.

when i was maybe 8 or so my family and i went to the beach,
i saw a group of surfers in the ocean and went towards them (in a "oh that looks interesting i will go check it out" sort of way)
anyway i got caught in a rip and a lifeguard helped me out. it scared my parents(a lot).
we left the beach straight after that and went swimming in the hotel pool.

Those tubes are so dangerous. There have been so many times that I've been ran over by them.

I've also nearly drowned at a wave pool. Again my step sister tried to sit on me but this time I was able to get back to the surface and call for help (because I was so exhausted I couldn't swim anymore and the life guard had to get me out).

At Lake MicMac at age 5, was swimming near the boat launch while the babysitter was too busy with her boyfriend and I lost my footing and ended off the drop off bobbing up and down in the water. Thankfully they finally noticed that and came over.

Woah, I never realized how beneficial those swimming lessons must have been. I can't remember a time when I couldn't handle the deep end.

When I was three I guess, my family was visiting a neighbor who had a backyard pool, and I fell in on the deep side. I remember watching the green tiles on the side of the pool pass me by, and I remember seeing bubbles pass from my mouth, and seeing the bottom approaching as I went down and I was feeling quite calm as this was happening. The next thing I remember is me sitting at their pick nick table eating a sandwich. However after that I was terrified of deep water, and it took me several years to get over that.

swimming lessons are really important, i learnt how to swim in school and my mother took my brothers and sisters and I for lessons outside of school as well.
after that episode at the beach we didn't go swimming at the beach anymore until I was older.

i'm shocked at all these responses. I didn't think nearly drowning was that common.

don't stay underwater long enough really but when I was younger I used to like going underwater, one day I did this something above me trapped me for a short time which felt like an eternity, I could have lasted longer under water but thought if I did not get out I would drown, I was a kid and at the time couldn't swim, was late learning

ive had a near drowning experience before... at the pool where i used to live. i remember playing volleyball with a nerf ball i found, when i suddenly got pushed under. i couldnt see who pushed me, but i was slowly drowning. i reached up and tried to hit them, but failed. i must have fainted, cuz after i woke up i was on the side with a man looking over me. anyone else almost drowned like this too?
