You can subscribe to Dictionary.com, and they will automatically send out daily word definitions to your inbox. It's pretty cool.

It used to be one of my obsession, but the novelty has worn off.

When I used to use Microsoft Word all the time, I'd always be right-clicking words to check the thesaurus suggestions for them. Sometimes I'd even just check a bunch of random words, or see how far from the original meaning I could get by following a string of thesaurus definitions.

If there are ditionaries around, I'll sit and flip through them, though I've never tried reading them cover-to-cover. I've also got a pocket english/swedish dictionary around here somewhere that I look though every now and then, because I like seeing how the words translate across a language.

As for me, I don't know Turkish, but I do like many Youtube vids of the kind where people have written subtexts in Danish that are not a translation, but what they think the Turkish text sounds like in Danish. :P That becomes something really funny sometimes.

An example from the song Dinle:

Müptela oldum aska seninle,
Kayboldum gözlerinde,
Ucurumsun sen bu bedende. (Hope it's spelled correctly; it's just out of the memory.)

That becomes:
Nøgtern er, at du vasker silden,
Kaj Voldum gør sig ilde
Og tjener tusind på benene.

That is:
Level-headed is that you wash the herring,
Kaj Voldum makes himself bad
And earns thousand on the legs / bones.

:P

I love them! It's not a constant thing, but I sometimes go through the dictionary or thesaurus looking for words that appeal to me.

I get the dictionary site* word of the day notices too :) They do tend to get ignored for a day or two when they arrive, but I always get around to reading them eventually. They're fun, especially when my favourite words are featured.

*Please forgive the awkwardness here - I'm sure you all know what I mean, but I'm not supposed to post urls yet. (New girl alert, heh! *wave*)

Edit: Lol, I love the little translation there.

I've got an old Shorter Oxford English dictionary that my dad stole for me from the council. It has a wonderful smell.

It's filled with lots of obscure words so often when I go to look up a certain word I'll come away with the definitions of ten others I'd never heard of before.

sorry, i should have specified.
i mean the words are very general. the language cant go into much detail. for example, there is no distinguishing between turtle and tortoise. flakes and scales are the same....there are some words that mean 5 different things or so, but i cant remember them.

Meraba Spazzergasm!
Many years ago I spent one month in Turkey travelling with a good friend who is now passed on, we had a great time.
When I had Turkish children in the class I took for English as a second language I was fortunate to have a little knowledge of Turkish, Turkey and the small dictionary I still possess.
Turkey is cok guzel!
