Simple as that. That's the only reason.

I didn't. I didn't really use the internet much until I was 14.

I would definitely consider age 14 as growing up with it.

You know, there's a saying: you are never too old to learn. I think the only reason why oldies are not so accustomed to new technology is because of the culture of their generation. If the people around them all have facebook, they will get facebook. This is what I don't understand. how come the new technology is not so much "penetrating" into their culture.

Exactly right. And old people don't care about Facebook and the like because they never had it when they were younger and don't see the need for it now.

It's not always true though - my gran uses Facebook and plays Farmville a lot! :P

I never had facebook when I was younger. Lets take an age group where many use facebook. Twenty-somethings (age 20-29). Facebook only existed for about 6 years (maybe not even, I'll need to look this up) so some of those people could not possibly had facebook when they were teens. They definitely did not grow up with facebook.

Heh, young people always think that the limitations of older people are because of their "culture". Try to think more along the lines of routines: older people are not used to the new technology. They've spent decades doing things differently, and old habits and thinking patterns are hard to break. Also, new technology and scientific advancement are not always good or healthy. Older people have had more experience and usually more wisdom to treat new things with more skepticism, instead of immediately embracing the latest and greatest.

"You are never too old to learn."
"You can't teach an old dog new tricks."

The truth is in somewhere in between.

Because young people have no idea that technology is complicated and "too hard" for them to grasp. I have three grandchildren under 7 who can operate computers. They have been doing it all their lives almost. The three year old regards it as naturally as picking up a crayon and drawing with it.
