This is only my opinion. I do not mean to insult anyone. I believe that "magic" is self contradictory. Anything which circumvents the laws of physics (true reality) can not exist. I was raised in a religion which taught this sort of nonsense (Christian Science) and now I believe that anything supernatural is by definition impossible. That is not to say that everything there is to know has been discovered, but "magic" would have to follow the laws of physics to work, which I would say would not be magic.
I disagree, and here's why. The universe as we know it is dumb and subject to testing but there's nothing to say there aren't a bunch of intelligent creatures lurking somewhere in the shadows able to do something odd. If I pick up a book and let go of it, it'll fall. If I pick up a book and invoke the aid of one of these hypothetical creatures to stop it falling, it'll fall. Unless the creature a) really does exist and b) wants to do something for me. The second part is of great importance. Magic which requests the aid of other intelligences - call them demons, call it God, whatever - is not easily subject to scientific investigation because they can always choose to withhold their power if it seems like someone is snooping on them. ^^
I don't think they're out there, but if they were, we couldn't easily confirm their presence unless they wanted us to know.
I'm with the "love spells are unethical" posters.
