I like spiders because they kill and eat mosquitoes...can't stand mosquitoes. Tea, the video of the spider covering itself up with sand was cool :thumleft:

@seanmw, that video was hilarious :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I have a lot of Wolf Spiders where I live. They're such beautiful creatures.

A picture my husband took of one in our hallway.

I used to love spiders. Then I met my boyfriend who lived amongst many fiddlebacks and decided to catch one and scare the fricking crap out of me! Yep. I freeeeak out on spiders now. But my best friend used to be a yellow and black gigantic garden spider. Now that I think about it, I always wondered why the lady bugs stopped going to my little rock pile I made for them when the spider moved in... xD

I've held a Rosie and a Mexican Red Knee tarantula. The Red knee was strikingly beautiful and huge, but my favorite was the Rosie. It released a bunch of liquid on me after about 5 minutes on my arm. The owner told me it was the spider's version of "sweat". All I can say is it was a weird and totally unexpected sensation!

I wouldn't mind having one some day.

^ She's got legs!
So delicate and graceful.

They feel so neat on the skin.

I've always admired spiders, and have accidentally destroyed webs to get the perfect shot of a common orb weaver. But it was the tarantula species that I held first. There's just something about them. Maybe it's similar to how some that have some fear of snakes often hold a big species first. I'm a snake keeper and have been involved in public education, so I've seen this a lot. Big snakes don't creep people out as much as smaller ones. It seems to be the same with tarantulas as far as spider representatives go. :D

I've never had the opportunity to hold a Tarantula. I have held lots of small and medium spiders, though. I am particularly fond of Wolf Spiders.

Tried to keep a Wolf Spider as a pet once, but it freaked my daughter out and wouldn't eat. So... I let it go. :-(

I saw a really weird spider today. It was mostly black with small yellow stripes on its sides, one each. And its legs were in an X. I wonder now if it was

That spider covering itself with sand is so cute - it reminded me of my dog. I love spiders. Once I disturbed/destroyed a web cleaning brush from my yard - I planned on catching the spider and relocating it, so as used a stick to clear the web away and raised the jar to catch her she rushed over to her egg and wrapped her legs around it. I was stunned. It was so self sacrificing. I gently got them both and moved them. The next day I noticed she had carried the egg a fair distance from where I left her in the jar and built a new web.

It's kind of scary how protective some spiders are of their eggs. A Wolf Spider is likely to bite you if she thinks you're a threat to her egg sac.
