I've never lived in the USA, but, as I was thinking of what I would find attractive about the country, the words of Dr. Lars Perner came to mind. Dr. Perner is an autistic man from Denmark who now lives in the USA. He said that life was easier for him in the USA because the expectation to conform was less than in Denmark. I like that. :)

Overall, I don't find the USA attractive and wouldn't want to come to live there. :( There are several reasons for that: the superpower arrogance; it's difficult to live in the USA without a car; it's difficult to be an atheist in the USA; as a worker you don't have much holidays. For California, the earthquakes would put me off coming to live there, too.

I've heard similar things about Denmark from ex-patriots.

Regarding your second paragraph - while a lot of that is true for a large portion of the country, all of those things are solved in nyc. It's a pretty savvy place that's very tolerant culturally and doesn't seem to have the superpower arrogance. you don't need a car there, you can be any religion you want (openly), and there are tons, of holidays there and the workweek is generally 35 hours rather than the 40 of the rest of the country.

And regarding superpower arrogance, I hope you don't feel that we're all like that. That impression and in some cases belief (on the part of individual Americans) is I think, the result of propaganda and not everyone has bought it. There are lots of really great people here. :)

I forgot to say what I like - southern home cooking. Not Cajun so much, but food from the southeast. Corn pudding, collards, buttermilk biscuits, etc.

I love America. Lots of people think America is great because they lived here their whole lives.. The American health care is the best in the world if you are rich & do not have any preexisting conditions that could exclude you from instance coverage. People do NOT need education to be successful in America either because some of the most successful people here have got where they wer simply because of their families or other connections. America is very concerned about the safety of others witch is why we went to Iraq so we could protect the world from weapons of mass destruction. America also believes in 2nd chances like when we reelected George W Bush. America also believes in protecting others from their own mistakes like bailing out the auto industry, the mortgage lenders & other institutions. America is the best country ever witch is why we should be the only country to have nuclear missiles

I like the fact that here in America, people are encouraged to be individuals (even though that doesn't stop a lot of people from following trends...) I also like having Freedom of Speech. :)

I love the interstates and the consistency of what to expect when you travel across the country. It is different and the same all at once.

That women are actually allowed and encouraged to have a life of their own outside of having babies. Universities that offer a variety of culture among the faculty and students. I've learned so many fascinating things about the world from my professor who was born in France. I'll come back if I think of any more. :D

Yes, I know that. I have an American friend here in the UK who is very accepting and not remotely arrogant.
