Sodapop here...

My family is from Philadelphia, so I'd guess it came from there. I hear most others saying "Coke" generically in Socal, even if it's lemonade.

I'm from England so I say "Fizzy Drink". When we say "coke" we're usually referring to drinks such as "Pepsi" and "Coca-Cola".

In the South you ask for a Coke and the waitress says "what kind".

Tennis Shoes

Sub

Garage Sale

Supper.

Quarter til.

My grandmother used to call the couch "the divan". Water fountains are "bubblers". Shopping cart is a "buggy" and the liquor store is the "package store". I'm sure there are others. It's almost like a foreign language...

I'm from Ohio.
I am probably the only one I know who says soda instead of pop.
Sneakers
What the heck is a grinder? Sub.
Yard Sale
Dinner
15 til.

Also, tissues/sponges/toliet paper/paper towels/face towels/regular towels/dishrags all equal rags in my family, which gets rather confusing.

where are you from and what do you say? Kentucky

soda or pop or coke? Coke.

Wiki has this to say about it:
Likely influenced by the dominance of Coca-Cola in the Deep South, a carbonated beverage in general sometimes is referred to as Coke, even if referring to non-colas. Soft drink and soda are sometimes used, usually in large cities.

I live in a large city, and have never heard anything used but "Coke".

sneakers or tennis shoes? Tennis shoes. Though I rarely say this, not owning any.

sub or grinder? Sandwich. I had to look this one up.

tag sale or yard sale or garage sale? Yard sale/garage sale.

dinner or supper? Supper.

'quarter til five' or 'quarter of five' or 4:45? Four fourty-five.

Very interesting question!

ok, i could make everyone laugh, but i won't. grew up as poor white trash in a kentucky housing project. the only reference i'll share is that i was in the military before i knew there was a thing called a refrigerator. had only heard these things called frigidaire,. as in the brand. oh, the shame.

in basic training, met my first humans not of kentucky. one fellow was from maine. could not understand a word he said.

at this point, have been in all 50 states and 40+or- countries, have been entertained by dialects, a few.

For some reason, it really aggravates me when people use the word "Pop."

Granted, a lot of things in modern society and language aggravate me, but that especially.

I rarely drink it, but when I do, it is a "Soda." on my lips.
