I do not know why so many people dislike Timon, but I can tell you why I dislike the character: he is a bad guy. He acts like he is Pumbas best friend, but he is always taking advantage of him and stealing his ideas. He is a very despicable character. Not good at all.
But can't we make a distinction between "nice person" and "interesting character"? He is an interesting character; a funny one, too. No, he's not nice--he's not outright evil or anything, but he isn't particularly nice. Still, you can like a character without approving of his actions. There are many wonderful villains, antiheroes, tricksters, and generally flawed characters out there.

That's true.

In this respect, Rafiki is a creepy monkey with drugs. 8O

I've always liked characters like Timon and the sloth(?) in Ice Age play by John Leguizamo(sp) although I am pretty much the exact opposite in personality. I like people like them irl too but in small doses.

I always liked the Lion King. As for Timon and Pumba, I too always considered them as a pair. It's hard to separate them in my mind enough to say why one would be hated. It seems a little nearsighted on the part of the fandom to hate Timon exclusively. I don't recall him being uniquely annoying. Rather, I liked his character overall since he had a good attitude.

Call me judgmental, but if I do not like the way a character behaves, then I do not like the character. As simple as that. It is like having a friend. If I do not like the way he/she behaves, we cannot be friends. I know I should be more "understanding", but I do like the way I am. I think you avoid a lot of problems and pain that way. And Timon could never be my friend. He is abusive. I do not like being abused.

It's a question about why NTs like one character or another. And meerkats are the OP's special interest. Seems General Autism enough to me.

Ilka, I get that you only like characters who you'd want to be friends with--a perfectly reasonable preference. Just remember that lots of people like characters they wouldn't want to hang out with for a second.

It's often a truly well-crafted villain that makes the hero shine. In some situations, the villain is just more interesting than the hero (though personally I think that's a sign of less-than-ideal storytelling--the hero should be interesting in his own right). Appreciation for villains isn't the same as appreciation for villainous people in real-life.

Yes, I know that. I am just saying what I like and what I think. I know some people like characters they wouldn't want to hang out. I even know some people who like to hang out with people they should run away from, like good girls dating bad guys...

I also get your point that a well-crafted villain makes the hero shine. I do appreciate a good villain -like Hannibal Lecter, for example. But that does not mean I like him. And I still dislike Timon.

Hmmmm....I didn't really know Timon was hated. I don't hate him...I like the Lion King, even after my 18 year old son watched it over and over and over again when he was a toddler...must be something there.

People hate Timon? That's news to me. I remember when I first saw Lion King in theaters, I was dissapointed because every character in the movie talked about the circle of life, but I never saw the circle with the word "life" in it. Only later did I realize that the circle of life isn't a place you can literally go to.

Strange, I thought Timon was highly revered.

Timon is a dick. He's always making anti-Semitic jokes around me, and one time he got drunk and peed on my leg in public.

Timon is an as*hole. People on Lion King forums probably tell you to shut up because you ask questions with such obvious answers. You might as well ask what color Timon is, and you'll probably get the same reaction. Timon's assholitity towards Pumbaa and Simba is just as obvious as the color of his fur. In contrast, since Nala's father is neither Scar nor Mufasa, it must be some other lion. The identity of this lion is unknown within the established movies, and thus is a question worth asking.

So basically, when someone asks why Timon is hated, the common response probably contains a facepalm, whereas when the identity of Nala's father is questioned, the response is probably "I don't know either." The former adds a sort of a social barrier, and the latter does the opposite. It's kinda like a ToM thing. Since people who are different are treated like crap, if you ask a question making it obvious that you're different, it most likely isn't going to go well. Asking who Nala's father is verifies that there are no observable differences in thought processes, as everybody wants to know the answer to that question. When people meet people who are more like them, they are more likely to treat them better.

This isn't just for neurologies, but for everything from common interests, to races, and even species. People don't ever treat everyone fairly, no matter how much they like to pretend they do. This is why people who have a lot in common are friends. This is why people with different beliefs hate each other. This is why animals are sometimes treated worse than even other humans. I can't imagine how we would treat aliens if we came in contact with them. Add in fear to the prejudice, and wow, that's a catalyst for disaster right there.
