Frankly, as long as someone wears clean clothes that fits properly. That's all that really matters...along with making sure the colors don't clash. :P

I never notice what other people are wearing, and I don't care much about what I wear. I look sloppy even in dress clothes, I think. Obviously, I'm going to wear them if I'm going to an interview or something, but eh... I just bought 5 pairs of pajama pants, which is what I wear 99% of the time. 8)

I do find it annoying though when people expect others to look better than they themselves are willing to do.

Being properly groomed and wearing good looking clothes is a great investment in quality of life.
My keyboard is broken so I'll get more into this later but the benefits are a positive loop I absolutely agree with you nilescrane.

So long as you're willing to accept the consequences, you can even tape newspapers to your body and walk around that way, too.

It's all about understanding the consequences of your choices, and knowing you have choices in the first place, which admittedly some Aspies do not realize. I think this thread is specifically for people who don't want the consequences of looking scruffy and unkempt but are unsure how to go about fixing it.

what are the consequences of looking scruffy and unkempt?

is it that people, who i don't care about, judge me? what does that matter?

well said  :)
if anyone cares that much about me looking scruffy, they're really not worth the hassle.

It's not a conscious judgment most of the time. I'm not advocating trying to impress a bunch of pretentious fashionistas. The fact is people will respect you more, your interactions will be more positive, this will keep you feeling confident and open up more opportunities.

While you are correct, I suspect you don't understand why.

I pay attention to what I wear. Some things are expensive but some I've managed to get cheap off ebay or etsy. Sales are good too.

However, I don't really care what my partner wears as long as they like it and feel comfortable in it.

I have very low vision & some colorblindness. I also cant do a clean shave on my face due to my low vision & a tremor disorder. It is literally impossible fore me to have fashion sense. Fashion is illreverential to me.

I love scruff dogs, they remind me of me, and I pet them twice as much because I know everyone else treats us like we are lepers.

I don't shop at walmart, but sometimes I get clothes at target....but my favorite place is Ross. It is a step above without paying too much more. Weird thing is, I care more about my clothes than my teeth (as you used as an example). I'll worry about outfits and fall asleep and forget to brush my teeth...so, there is such a thing as caring too much. But I see your point with the thread, it really isn't that hard, but maybe it is a struggle for some people. Maybe they don't care what they look like. You said that clothes represent what they want to tell the world, and maybe they want to say that. Not that they are sloppy, but maybe that they are different or defiant. I know in 7th grade I would purposely try to find huge t-shirts to show that I was defiant. Sometimes the solution isn't just one way, but everyone has there own solution.

This could very well belong in the Love and Dating forum since it's a topic that comes up on their often, but I was told to stay away from that section of the site and I have and will continue to do so.

I hear guys complaining about the fact that fashion matters so much to potential suitors. The thing is, you don't have to spend a lot to look good. It's very likely that you're already spend that much money anyway on crappy clothing.

And what's you're definition of crappy clothing exactly?

nilescrane wrote:
I'm currently wearing a pair of levis jeans that I bought a year ago for about 25 or 30 bucks...a kirkland brand (generic costco brand) teal dress t shirt that I paid 10 bucks for, and a joker purple long sleeved collared shirt from express that was on sale for 15 bucks, and the outfit looks like something out of an advertisement. The jeans, since I've worn them so many times, are dark and have that faded look that's in style...and the shirts fit me perfectly.

Now don't mistake this as saying to wear this kind of clothing...find your own style. But when I see some of the guy's styles on here (who've posted pics) and then hear about the standards they have in the opposite sex...it doesn't add up. The thing about clothing is, it represents how you want to come off to the world...and by wearing shirts/pants that don't fit or look ordinary or sloppy, you're basically saying "i don't care about my appearance."

Find your own style? what like you have? yeah the faded jeans look is so original. Ever thought that maybe some people have a different opinion on what looks good?

Women, and the general public too, don't care WHAT you wear as long as you look neat and presentable. Wearing "I'm with stupid" t shirts and jogging pants just says "I really don't care about myself or life."

They actually do. From my experience you can be as neat and presentable as possible but still look terrible.

Fashion is perhaps the biggest form of social control we have.
