Any number of reasons, many are the same as down in the lower 48 but the extended winters and lack of sunlight tend to take a toll on many. Drug and alcohol problems are fairly prevalent through out Alaska and especially in the native villages (because of this most villages are "dry" and it's illegal to have alcohol). Single women are a little scarce up there as well so if you are man don't expect to date much or at all and the loneliness pushes many over the edge (both in suicide and rape). And Alaska tends to draw a higher number of mental ill people since many see it as a place to get away from the rest of the world.
