I most always read the washing instructions, and I consider the recommendations. But I've been doing my own laundry since I was old enough to reach the controls on the washing machine, and I do it the best way I have found through experience with regard to preservation of material and color, and prevention of bleeding, etc. I hate it when someone else kindly does my laundry, as I don't want anyone messing with my clothes. I like to keep clothing in the best shape possible for as long as possible (I've had some shirts and pants for over 25 years and still wear them). I always separate whites from colors, and I always wash towels and jeans together but not with smooth fabric like T-shirts, so as not to "fuzzy" the smooth materials. I never put things with elastic (boxers, etc) in the dryer, as they wear out too fast. I hang dry all that. In fact, I often hang dry all clothing; only putting towels and sheets in the dryer.
So the bottom line is that I usually do a safer job than the tag says to do.
