no. i can't understand why anyone would weep over the death of someone they never knew. also the man was a horrid excuse for a human and i'm quite glad he died as he was starting his retirement so he couldn't enjoy the money he got by screwing other people over.

Nope, I don't know him.

And both inherited their ideas from Xerox.
Xerox didn't realise what it had with the WIMP (Window, Icon, Menu, and Pointing device) system, but at least Apple bought the rights to the Alto GUI and did something useful with it.
Gates, as ever, just copied.

I was aware of that. Jobs often took existing technology (i.e. mp3 players) and refined them in such a way as to make them so popular that the general culture was changed. Then Microsoft (and others) copied his refinements.

I was saddened, but didn't cry because I was never a fan of Apple.

I will assume that you are not being intentionally provocative simply to elicit a reaction. The only way anyone could criticize Steve Jobs (based on all the interviews I know of) is that he was a demanding boss with a temper. Anyone working for Jobs had the option to quit. I suspect that few did.

Jobs' through his companies helped revive the music industry when he created the iTunes store. Recording artists are glad Jobs made this contribution. Millions of people who use Apple products and enjoy watching Pixar films are glad that he helped make those companies succeed. Even those who don't use Apple products benefited through other products that copied that innovation.

It wasn't sad for me. As a techie I've never liked Jobs, have never rated Apple or their products especially highly (they're good, but they're very far from being the messianic wonderstuff their Fry-type fanbois tell themselves) and I really detest their snobby approach to pricing (veering towards Veblen-goods for some of it, especially away from the US, they love their overseas markup) and the general lack of user serviceability of their kit.

No, I did not. The first thing I thought when I heard the news was how long it would take for someone to incorporate it into a meme. It took less than 12 hours and was surprisingly amusing.

No.

But, even though I don't care for the Apple company and its cult following, I do have to respect Jobs as a pioneer in the personal computer field.

Just so no one thinks I am a zombie like fanboy, I have only owned one Apple product: their least expensive Mac Mini that is several years old. I was going to get an iPod Touch on closeout, but when I got it home, I discovered that I couldn't use it unless I upgraded my computer to the tune of about $140 us dollars. I returned it. I would have preferred that they added (an admittedly ugly) list of requirements on the package. I'll probably get an Android tablet instead. Apple used to be the only alternative to Microsoft (unless you include Linux, which I do use) but now Android is an option.

No. I am a rabid Apple fan, and Steve was one of very few people I look up to, but I never feel sad about death. Especially Steve's. He has suffered from cancer for years and now he's not suffering anymore. I'm glad he's at peace, but I'm not sad.

Seriously?
God no - why would I cry because he died, more than some other random person on the planet?
So he did something you admire or find useful - and I'm sure everyone else who dies also did the same thing for someone too. Will you cry for them?

It's sad and truly meaningful for his immediate family and friends because they knew him well; they had the measure of the man and his personality and interacted with him on a daily basis. Their loss is immediately up-close and personal.
But to us, the distant consumers? Oh, please - he was the CEO of a successful company like thousands of others.
Also, he was effectively dead years ago when the cancer was diagnosed - did you cry then, because surely knowing the man had been handed a death sentence is more horrifying than his actually dying.

Will you cry when Steve Wozniak dies? Apple wouldn't have existed without him too.
Will you cry when Bill Gates dies?
Will you cry when Joan Allsop dies?

(who is Joan Allsop, you're doubtless wondering. Just someone else on the planet you have no personal connection with, and who happens to be a sweet old lady of 85)

/end rant on the cult of pseudo-grief

It's Steve who changed the world and i looked up to him.. isn't it human to cry when someone like that dies? i don't control when i cry really :P

Ok we get it no need to be a jackass about it.

Some of these comments are really mean spirited. You don't need to have actually met someone to still be saddened by their death.

I never cried but I was still pretty upset, mostly because I am a huge Pixar fan.

Nowhere near the extent that Apple fanboys are claiming. Apple produce extremely good-looking hardware with average to good performance, and most of it is very tightly locked down and controlled by Apple - that's all.
Steve Jobs wasn't the second coming, fer chrissakes...

I have no idea. I didn't cry, and neither did many other people posting here - does that make us inhuman?

@Freak-Z: I think some of us are simply able to draw lines between marketing hype, good products vs. sexy design, and an over-inflated causal reputation and if some of these comments seem mean-spirited to you then I would suggest that to some degree, you cannot.
"I never cried but I was still pretty upset, mostly because I am a huge Pixar fan." Sorry, but this makes no sense to me. Steve Jobs wasn't involved with Pixar's (excellent) output - he simply bought the company.
It might make more sense if he was their chief animation consultant or was responsible for the software in use - which was, the last time I checked, all Linux-based.

I do not and probably never will understand this odd need some people seem to have of posting maudlin, gushing statements about a person they have not met - because it means they have an image of that person and/or company which a PR department worked to instill.
In other words; a fantasy designed to help sell the products.

Obviously I cannot then. Get over yourself. I always thought all hardcore apple fans were smug but now it seems all the anti-apple people are just as bad. Not everybody buys apple products just because of marketing hype and sexy design.

I am by no means an apple fan boy, just think some comments on here are a little harsh.

Buying and believing in the company seems like a pretty big deal to me. Without him who knows what would have happened to Pixar.

Sorry you think it's just smugness. Nothing I can do about that.

It would probably have died - like Apple almost did when Jobs was ousted from it last time around.
Like thousands of other companies live or die without comment every day.
And if Pixar was a company which simply made tyres I doubt anyone would consider Jobs' buying it a big deal.
