Lol, and now I'm kind of going to start giving examples of things I do when I hang out with other furries to show you that they aren't as weird and strange as you guys would think. Today, I went out shopping for materials with a friend of mine from just across the border with Georgia. He's the sabertooth in the doodle I posted earlier. We're both trying to make these really creepy-terrifying follow-me eyes out of epoxy for our fursuits. He also downed like 100 bucks on fur and foam for some stuff he's gonna start making for friends, tru facts. We hung about, talked to each other in sarcastic lispy hipster voices, bashed the fandom, and pretty much had a great time. I've only known him for like a week but we're already pretty good friends.

I often go for long periods without shaving. Does that count?

I honestly never knew until I read this thread there were furries who were into it for any reason other than fetish. I had seen references to it and the costumes on some tv shows, but thought they were referring to the fetish furries.

As for collars, I know that some people wear collars for other fetish reasons, to let people know they are into a certain type of fetish. Some people also wear them for fashion, so it's never really easy to tell why a person is wearing something, unless it's at a specific venue for a specific subculture.

The reason I started reading this thread was I was wondering why it wasn't in the Adult section. LOL! Shows what I know, huh?

^^ I know that some of aspects of the fandom are rather unsavory, but the fandom is a legitimate nerd subculture with an ever-growing population and I feel that if it isn't represented, people will mistake them for something they're not. But I don't like to conceal things from people, thus why I go into some detail on the darker parts but not enough so that it gets thrown out into the adult section.

Same. I don't do the fursuit thing, or have any involvement with the sexual aspect of the fandom, but I appreciate well done realistic/clean anthro art and have a "fursona" so to speak.

Erm, ShenLong? You do realise that the last comment on my first post on here was a joke right?

I'm not really sure if I'm a furry or not. When I was a kid, I only watched shows and movies with talking animals or monsters in them (the notable exception being the Beetlejuice cartoon), and if there were humans in the story (like with Pokemon or Digimon), I would get annoyed and wish that the cartoon only focused on the animals/monsters.

All throughout my childhood, I was obsessed with wolves thanks to the animated movie Balto and one day I discovered a website where a group of friends drew all of their favorite anime characters in anthro wolf form. I loved that website very much and started making up my own original wolves. Then I discovered the anime Hamtaro which was almost completely focused on talking hamsters, so I got obsessed with that and started drawing everyone I knew, both real and fictional, in the show's signature hamster style. I also made up a crossover world in my head where Balto and Hamtaro were best friends who went on adventures and fought evil together.

Then for whatever reason I stopped obsessing over wolves and Hamtaro and got into anime and eventually live-action stuff with just humans in them.

I thought my anthro-loving days were behind me, but then I discovered My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and it became a special interest. Now I'm doing the same thing I did with Balto and Hamtaro: making up original characters and drawing everybody in the style of the show!

Also... and this is the biggest reason why I suspect that I'm a furry... and I really hope I don't cause this to be moved to the adult section, but... I regularly look at "adult" furry pictures, both of My Little Pony characters and just stuff in general. There's a part of me that feels really ashamed about it, so when I'm around my family, I openly bash furries and call furries perverts so my family won't suspect that I'm really engaging in that kind of stuff in secret.

Since my first post I've kinda gained a more positive attitude towards furries... Now, I've never disliked furries, but my friend ShenLong has helped me realise that alot of furries are actually just normal people, with a harmless interest that is geeky at the most. As for the erm, more racy parts of the fandom, I'm not really bothered by that anymore. People can like whatever they want IMO, and it only becomes wrong and a problem if they hurt someone or something, which most furries wouldn't do anyway.

The truth is, alot of furries aren't hyper dramatic, hypersexual or odd in a bad way. Most are kind, decent people who just have an interest in cartoon animals. Why does everybody assume that it has to be sexual? And even if it is, it's the 21st century, they aren't harming everybody, and they're just cartoons. Is it slightly odd? Yes, but then again I wouldn't hold it against somebody if they liked "adult" furry art. But the thing is, alot of furries don't even like that side of it. Furries are ok people, just avoid the crazies and you should be fine.

I'm on the fence. I think I would be less torerant if it weren't for the fact that my own fetish is pretty freakin' weird (and, strangely enough, seems to coincide with furries quite often, even though it has nothing to do with animals).
I can sympathise with the fact that they get a bad rap because of a small percentage of genuine creepy perverts.

You're right to a degree, Sci. Many of these people do have fetishes that involve the fandom, but that's not usually why they're in the fandom in the first place. The key is how they present themselves as people. Many won't divulge anything unless they somehow get to that topic. It's like regular porn. Because I have the mature filter off to view violent or idealogically sensitive art on Furaffinity, as a side-effect I end up finding out about my friends being into fetishes through their favorites and not through the act of talking to them. Who counts talking about porn or sex to be among their everyday topics of discussion? Very few people because that's dumb.
Some furries feel the need to be overly sexual, but they act like this only around fandom members. Oh, the things that happened at that party last week, I couldn't tell you. Is it wrong? Only when it hurts someone or becomes annoying. Are all these guys zoophiles? Most likely, in the loosest, most unconscious way and by that, I mean people with an anthropomorphic fetish. Bestiality is extremely frowned upon in this community, and while there are admittant zoophiles who are actually a hundred percent into that stuff, I assume most of them usually care about animals enough that they'd never practice. Even after all the things I've seen while being oppositional towards most furries(but not necessarily the fandom). I only know one admitted zoophile and he's so incredibly down to Earth and against Furries being lewd off the internet that I kind of look up to him even though I've only met him once IRL.

So yeah. Lol, every time I get into or make a topic pertaining to this, I have to elaborate and confirm and dispel and elaborate. People coming in should probably read the OP before writing down that furries are sick or pure fetishists. We're not having that problem now, but yeah.

Furry/anthro is also an art style, like I've probably said, and most people interact with each other through art. I'd spam some more but I'm not in the mood.

Not really, I was just wondering if that "hipster" jibe was serious or not.

I made it intentionally "hipster" sounding just for a laugh.

Not sure if I'm being patronised or not now. Sorry if I am just being paranoid though.

Oh hey! I didn't see this before, glad to know there are at least a few aspies who are also furs, fursuiters too. I've been furry for about as long as I can remember, I've never been able to draw but I have half a pc full of bad stories and bio's I've written over the years. Anyway nice to know you're here and I'm probably going to be sticking around.
