It's taken way too long.

I am not a native English speaker and I make many grammar mistakes, but I am flabbergasted (always wanted to use this word :D ) whenever I read words like "your" instead of "you are", "alright" instead of "all right" and "should of" instead of "should have".

When speaking in my native language (Portuguese; contrary to popular belief, Brazilians do not speak Spanish, despite any similarities between the two heavily Latin-influenced languages), I am not just a Grammar Nazi: I am Grammar Hitler himself.

their - they're
tho - though

I always thought "tho" was simply the American (perhaps state-localized) version of "though". Does it have a different meaning?

It's not a word.
It's how the gramatically-challenged/lazy say "though".

I'm ashamed you've seen it so much you thought it characteristic of America.

I've found another word to correct! Now I feel dirty for letting people get away with "tho" for all these years.

I'm not hung up on other peoples grammar. I enjoy the company of others and it doesn't matter if they have good grammar or not. All that matters is that the people that I'm getting to know here, are interesting.

I quite frequently use 'tho'. It's a handy shorter version of 'though' and the meaning is clear is it not?

Obviously I wouldn't use it on a job application, or formal letter, but using that sort of deliberate shorthand on a forum post seems fine to me.

I can get a bit irked by obvious simple grammatical errors, but I'm also aware that there are people on WP with dyslexia, or who have been excluded from the education 'system' in some way, or have learning difficulties. If I ever correct someone it's either because I know them very well and am just teasing them, or I'm being an arse and deserve to be told so.

Many people on this site are socially excluded in some way, it seems a bit cruel to highlight any errors they make while on a support forum.

I just don't get it. 'Your' is not some weird verb/noun combination thing. It's a possessive noun. As in, if it is yours, then it belongs to you.
If you said, 'your the greatest man alive,' then I will ponder for a second what my 'the greatest man alive' is. (Not really, but maybe you can see my point.)

Yeah, I know you meant 'you're' as an abbreviation for 'you are,' but that's not even pronounced the same as 'your.'
'Your' should be pronounced 'yor' as in 'for.'
'You're' should be pronounced 'yooer' as in 'viewer.'

Phew, glad to get that off my chest.

EDIT: Yes, I did that to the title on purpose, so as to get people who noticed the error bothered.

your post has at least five punctuation errors, two grammatical errors, one clause error, and two colloquiallisms. there may be more mistakes, but i can't be arsed to track them down. if YOUR going to criticise other people's grammar, i suggest you work on your own first. ;)

in my dialect, we pronounce you're and your in exactly the same way.

EDIT: i forgot to mention that tho is an approved variant of though, but it is informal.

I really do not get why some people can get so hung up on correct & proper grammar. My grammar & typing is pretty horrible sometimes maybe due to my dyslexia. I do not notice a lot of my mistakes until they are pointed out & I am even less aware of others grammar mistakes. It amazes me that others can learn grammar so well that they get upset when others use it improperly. I wish my mind could learn that well

Proper use of language is important because language is used to communicate and even when used properly it can be difficult to make yourself understood. Mistakes happen and they don't bother me much, but intentionally or stubbornly using improper spelling or grammar is not acceptable to me.

I learned English mainly through the internet and by people correcting my mistakes, these people have made it much easier for me to communicate with a large number of people because they introduced me to a standard (the English language) that is used by the online majority. I can tolerate and sometimes even appreciate slang and vernacular but it does create an additional communicative hurdle.

I once misspelled grammar while fussing at someone about their grammar lol!

Isn't there some internet rule about that? Something like "any post attacking grammar or spelling must contain two or more errors"?
