We pay about $6/gallon in Europe. :(

But how do the people live there? I mean, what is the economy like? Is everything else expensive and it's just the gas that's cheap?

No, most things are pretty cheap or at least not more expensive than in the US or Europe. They have no taxes on gas and the oil fields belong to the state.
