Why? Being myself has won me far more in life than the alternative. People like me because I am who I am, and I don't follow the crowd or try to be something I'm not.

Well, by being yourself you can miss out on learning what to do in this or that social situation. I know this probably only applies to kids but I just don't want to tell people to be themselves.

I prefer to be accepted for who I am and not follow arbitrary rules that, in the long run, don't do me any good.

Being myself helps me in the long run. If I was not myself, and I was someone else, than how in the world would I get a career I desired? I know that walmart, target, and other big companies want you to follow the status quo, but in the lines of a place of a career, it is much better to be yourself.

I mean, Michael Angelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and just about every inventor, civil rights activist, scientist, artist, musician, etc all benefited from being themselves. I mean, how exactly do you make a living as a musician if everyone is playing Beethoven, or how exactly will you find the latest scientific finding if it is forbidden to stray from the beaten path? You wont.

I think it is MORE beneficial to be yourself, than to try to force yourself to fit into some small square and be somebody else.

I mean, why in the world would I want to be YOU?

Well, I think those would be cute with some accessories...but I don't dress cute for other people, I dress good because I like the way I look and I like colors and creativity. I might not wear the first dress because it would take some effort to spruce it up....but the 2nd one is very colorful. I might put a belt on it, a long plain colored necklace (preferably matching the belt) I would put headband and I don't know if I'd put is flower, that might push it. The only thing I'd have a hard time deciding on is shoes. If I were wearing it at home or a place where it was acceptable...barefoot would be the best option. Try and find colorful dresses, but with good patterns and such and add accessories and people will give you less flack. Of course, you are free to dress the way you like, but it's fun dressing up and being creative so I recommend it.

Oh, and I've been gaining weight on my stomach so I hate jeans! I love my short short for around the house...so comfy.

Also, have you ever considered skirts and shirts? People think those are in style now and you have more a=of an opportunity to mix it up with those.

Depends what I am doing and where I am going. I am not really all that shy about what I wear. I am more likely to get lazy with shaving and wearing work out gear when I don't need to be somewhere important.

Or we just don't get why it's such a big deal.

Fashion is connected to your appearance, which is a big deal.

You promised to be nicer this time. :D

One could argue that your long dresses are the style.

My theory is that societies invent what is fashionable or beautiful to isolate anyone who thinks differently.
It's better to just be yourself and not conform to society.

Your long dresses have a vintage look to them. :D

Hazeleye: Fashion is only important if you want it to be.
In other cultures fat and what is considered ugly = beauty. If a person judges you based on appearance than can never get to know you because of your personality..

I wear granny dresses, I like granny dresses! they are comfortable, and I like the way they feel on me. I do not like dresses that are too short, I like very long ones, and I hate the feel of pants on me, they just feel icky, and sweaty, and I just can't stand they way they feel on me.

the dresses I wear are similar to this:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/59199401/la ... ne-fogarty

and

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MelayWIYI1c/Sl-rG ... G_2172.JPG

But my family is acting as though wearing these dresses are as bad as if I was dressing like a prostitute. I have heard this from some acquaintances as well, but I like these granny dresses, and I don't think I should be forced to wear something else. I mean, there is nothing wrong with wearing conservative clothing, right?

I just don't get why people are telling me that I should start wearing "fashionable" clothing if I am happy dressing the way I am now...

those dresses are quite fashionable, actually. very hipster as they have a pseudo-vintage look. just tell people that when they give you grief. be confident about what you wear and nobody will question your fashion choices.

EDIT: when people used to question some of my more outrageous fashions i would just tell them i saw it in French Vogue. if you say it right, people will actually believe you.

Because being made to feel bad about yourself because you're different in a way that's entirely trivial is a bad thing. It causes a lot of pain sometimes. Venting about it helps. Isn't that the whole point of this forum?

When someone wrapped an animal hide around their body.

Before then, it was probably how someone applied mud and leaves to themselves that defined fashionable.

O, and to point out the real cause: as soon as you see that it's a necessity.

Honestly, I just wear various geeky t-shirts and a standard pair of jeans, f**k fashion.
