I mainly use IM for small talk.

I can sometimes go into deep conversations on IM/PMs, but that's only if I haven't seen the person I'm talking to for a while, and they don't wish to text/have a phone call.

I don't get pissy if the person I'm talking to doesn't reply. I just give it a few minutes, then leave...If they don't want to talk or can't talk, that's fine with me.

I've had the account i have for msn since 2003, i think i've spent the last 9 years permantly signed offline. The thought of someone messaging me and having to reply straight away is really stressful.

I do like using the the thing where u can send messages when they're not online though, i have a couple of slow time conversations going on with people where we probably only message once per week each on average but they've been going on for literally years. That's a pretty chilled out way to communicate.

I hate them. I've had people I've met online, people who I actually liked quite a bit, pretty much stop talking to me because I sucked so hard at it. I don't know what to say when I'm in the moment. Of course they'd take my short responses, and the long time it took me to make them, as a sign that I wasn't into the conversation when it was really very much the opposite. I definitely prefer talking to people on a message board, through private messages if the conversation is more personal, because it gives me the time to think through what they've said and come up with a worthwhile response.

Totally.

I have very short responses when someone DOES private message me for example (not IM but still random 1 on 1) and even shorter if I don't really want to talk to them.

Sometimes I don't even open them.

Yeah, a lot of the time I'm like, "Oh my goodness, what does it say..." and I get all nervous.

I get excited when I see I have a PM from someone but unfortunately the message usually isn't much & conversation doesn't got anywhere :( I'm lonely & don't really have many options to meet people offline so online communication is a substitute for having an offline social life.
