i always think that in order to make animals look so sad they must have treated them like s**t just for the sake of the ad. Or else they'd have nurtured them and made them feel safe after the abuse they went through.

At my last job they brought in a bunch of different charitys and asked the workers to donate, then they started to lay everyone off.

I truly see both sides of this. I can't watch some things, cannot stand it, but some people seem to be able to rationalize or ignore the obvious until they are forced to acknowledge what might be going on next door. Whether it is animals, kids, or elder abuse. Seems that these upsetting examples are what it takes to get people to report their suspicions.

I find those ads to be very sad, but at the same time, they help animals get adopted.

I don't like them either, but I also doubt that the animals shown have all been abused. My guess is that many of them were strays and have been in accidents, or just not taken care of. They probably just go to several different pounds and film the worst ones and the cutest ones. I doubt that every animal that has a visable injury and is shown is abused. I had a neighbor who had a beautiful Golden Retriever who went everywhere with him. He was cutting the grass one day and the dog was on the porch laying there watching. The lawn mower slung up a rock and it hit the dog in the eye. They took him to the vet and the dog lost the eye. He looked terrible for a while while it was healing, and if they filmed that dog and played a sad song in the background, people would automatically think some psycho kid had blinded him, when in fact, the dog was very loved and well taken care of.

They make me so sad and I don't understand why someone would abuse an animal. I have always thought they have brought in abused animals that were taken from their abusive owners and they use them in their ad to spread awareness. I think it is meant to upset people so they will report it or maybe donate to help those animals. But I have never witnessed any animal abuse unless I want to count children.

I once got upset in a movie where these bullies tied their victim's dog in a bag and set it on fire and they did it in front of their victim and held onto him so he couldn't rescue his dog. But the good news is there really was no dog and it was all fake and an act because no way would the movie company actually have these kids set a real animal on fire. But I wonder if they actually had the dog tied in that bag or did they put something in there to make the bag move and used sound effects to make dog sounds for the part? It's also consider abuse to tie an animal in something. I wouldn't have guessed.

The animal abuse commercials always make me kind of sad. I've gotten used to it over time and it doesn't bother me as much now. Bad things happen to people just as much as much as they do to animals, which is also sad and disturbing. I can't understand why some people are so sociopathic and feel the desire to cause someone or something so much pain. I know a lot about disturbing things that have happened in the past and disturbing things that are still happening. The Nazis and Spanish conquistadors were some of the worst sociopaths in history. There are no limits to the cruelty of mankind. Here is one example of a horrible thing the Nazis did.

Sulfonamide experiments

From about July 1942 to about September 1943, experiments to investigate the effectiveness of sulfonamide, a synthetic antimicrobial agent, were conducted at Ravensbrück.[17] Wounds inflicted on the subjects were infected with bacteria such as Streptococcus, Clostridium perfringens (the causative agent in gas gangrene) and Clostridium tetani, the causative agent in tetanus.[18] Circulation of blood was interrupted by tying off blood vessels at both ends of the wound to create a condition similar to that of a battlefield wound. Infection was aggravated by forcing wood shavings and ground glass into the wounds. The infection was treated with sulfonamide and other drugs to determine their effectiveness.

The funny thing about the Nazi's was the Third Reich was one of the first countries with laws against cruelty to animals, and they still exist in Germany today. One of the Nazi leaders felt that anyone who was mean to an animal should be killed. Go figure.

Ahh, very good point! Thank you for your input!

It's hard for me to watch those commercials too. I always look away and try to think about something else.

I can't stand those commercials at all. They try to appeal so much to emotion, that they forget everything else. If they tried a little less appeal to emotion it would be better.

These always make me sad too. Then I look over at my rescued dog. I think of all the dogs I've rescued before him too. I remember I'm doing my part and ignore the rest of the commercial.

This helps too:

They don't make me sad they just annoy me to the point where I change the channel. I don't want to be guilt tripped in to donating to a charity. I donate to the charities of my choice as much as I can afford (which isn't much), I don't want to be made to feel like a heartless Scrooge because I don't donate to every charity that comes my way.

It really affects me too. I remember reading a story in a newspaper about an abused dog, who had to be put down, and I hardly slept for a week. Yesterday, a leaflet came through our door. On it was a picture of a dead dog which was emaciated. I would not like for my daughter to see such a thing, so it was thrown out immediately. Maybe these images are powerful enough to make some people want to give to the charity. That's not the effect it has on me.

The film is 'The Butterfly Effect'. I love that film, but that scene makes me feel ill, even though it has a 'no animals were harmed' disclaimer.
