I learned French in about half a year to a decent level. I was very fixated on it at the time, though. That's what it takes me to learn a language so fast. I read books in French at home a lot with a dictionary and wanted to speak French with everyone. Right now, my brain is going off on a hundred trajectories, all non-language related, so I probably will find it very difficult to learn a language at this point.

I am now in between level A1 and A2 in farsi. I have studied it for 2 months.
I think that is quite fast. I am also hyperfocused on it and I use a lot of different material.

I have also begun to study bulgarian, I think I can reach B1 in that language before christmas. It helps me a lot that I know serbocroatian and russian. Beacuse of that I really dont use much energy on learning vocabulary
I also really love it's easy case system

Icelandic, German, and I've learned a decent bit of Egyptian Standard Arabic. I would say it took about 1-2 years.

English is my first and only language, for the moment.

I find it very easy to pickup words and phrases from other languages when surrounded by native speakers, then I end up using them in daily conversation with english speaking people.... like "Por qué?, porque!" when someone questions me... or I'll use bits of latin phrases I like.. Awkward! I learned how to order beer in multiples just by watching and listening to the waitress in a bar in Caracas, Venezuela. The cleaning guy at my boyfriends work is from Peru, he's been teaching me greetings whenever I see him, he speaks so fast it's hard for me to catch everything, he wants to teach me Spanish, I've always wanted to learn that and Mandarin. Problem is, I have almost no friends, let alone friends that speak those languages. Kind of a use it or lose it thing.

Before I am dead I will learn two more languages, maybe three.

Let me help you with your Mandarin. I have a quite a lot of experience with selfstudy. The first book/dvd you should buy is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Easy-Peasy-Chinese-Mandarin-Beginners/dp/1405318635/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341596639&sr=8-1

That book is an outstanding introduction to Mandarin :)

Then you ought to buy this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chinese-Mandarin-Conversational-Pimsleur-Conversation/dp/0743550498/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341596756&sr=1-3

Or if you have more money, buy this one instead: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mandarin-Understand-Pimsleur-Language-Programs/dp/0671790617/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341596756&sr=1-2
