I have never had a Grandpa (both died long before I was born), but I did have one Grandma (mother's side) living 'til I was 5. I called her Grandma. Had my grandfather been living in my lifetime, I probably would have called him "Papa", as that's how my mother and Grandma referred to him. My family has had kids late... My mother was 41 when I was born, and her mother was in her 40s as well. My grandpa on my mother's side was a Civil War veteran (died in the early 1930s of old age).

My dad's parents were dead by the time I was born and I used to call my grandpa and grandma from my mother's side Opa and Oma before they died. Which is Dutch and also German for grandpa and grandma.
