My computer still has a floppy drive.

Perhaps it's time for an upgrade.

I actually went out and bought one for my computer, used it 3 times, put it in my computer closet.

My fatigued eyes misread this title as something that should have been in the Adult Forum...

With that said, I still remember when they were used in digital cameras. Our high school still had one when I graduated. I still wish my desktop had one, since I have a large quantity of art I saved on "floppy" disks. Now they are used to decorate the Tree of Geekdom (like a Christmas tree but with tech and geek-related items like lightsabers, D&D and 40K minis, polyhedral dice, CD ROMs, computer mice, motherboards and of course, floppy disks).

*sigh* You've brought back a lot of memories for me. Up until 2002ish, I was using them a lot. I still have many of them with me, but I do not own a computer that can read them.

I find it funny that portable memory has gotten smaller and smaller over the past 25-some years. Something as small as my thumb can hold so much as 32GB. Amazing. :D

I can even go back further than the large floppies which I still have some around here. When I first got into computing in 1982 I used a tape recorder for my storage. Back then there were no floppy drives, CDrom drives or hard drives.

Yup, I had a tape drive for my Commodeore VIC 20 (mis-spelling intentional) back in the day. The computer had a whole 5K of RAM in it ! Sadly, we were too poor to buy the Commodeore 64 with it's 64k of ram. Nor could we afford the optional floppy drive.

Pfft! When I was a lad we used to backup data from our abacus onto clay tiles! We thought it was a great innovation when someone invented paper and ink! :P

Being serious, I too remember the days of 8 1/2 inch, 5 1/4 inch and 3 1/5 inch disks and prior to that tape. In fact tape lasted a long time due to its high capacity, the reel sizes went down though from around 10 inch diameter to micro-cassettes. When I worked as a mainframe computer operator I routinely had to carry huge removable disk platters to the fire-safe for storage. Could only carry one in each hand due to their size.

you still use tape in data center for long term storage of backups, their shelf life is long and they hold an amazing amount of storage compared to their size.

though today such backups are becoming rarer and rarer with the advent of cloud computing, we currently push our backups to a secured server.

I always tell people I remember the days when floppy disks were actually floppy! The "new" smaller disks that were most recently known as floppy disks to the world today were known as "hard disks" to us kids back then. It was around the early 90's. I started first grade in 1990.

During computer class, we'd all get to choose from playing Facemaker, Oregon Trail, or some fish game that I forgot because I always chose Oregon Trail, of course. They were all on floppy disks.

I also remember using a thing called a "turtle" that looked like an arrow that you moved with the arrow keys. Does anybody else remember that? After we learned how to use the turtle, we were introduced to a NEW smaller version of the turtle that you moved around with a thing called a "mouse" lol! I don't know if it was actually new, or if my school was just behind on the times, because my husband is older than me and doesn't remember turtles.

There's a guy on YouTube who uses floppy disks to make music. I forget his name, but he makes amazing music.

the reading noises are very nice,

oddly enough some servers still ship with their raid drivers on 3 ½ inch floppies and industry cnc machines often use them for firmware upgrades as well.

that said im glad they are a soon to be gone, installing wing commander was a struggle without end, 6 diskettes, still nothign compared to the 11 for the 5 inch.
