 It was bad enough when my car died going down hill, boy do you miss that power steering.

that's right, I forgot all about the manual steering. had to drive an old dump truck that looked a lot like that old blue dodge in the picture, I got buff arms from steering that thing.

My ex had this old 58 GMC painted Chevy orange,it was like trying to steer a wagon. He liked to race other vehicles on the highway,he had a 350 in it.Once when he did this the accelerator, which had no pedal, went thru the floor. That wasn't very much fun for me.Another time a loose hot wire hit another under the dash and smoke filled the cab,the latch on my door was of all things,a screwdriver.I couldn't get the dad blamed thing open, now it's funny to think of.Not so much at the time.None of these vehicles would have passed a safety inspection in most states. :D Times were looser,I remember we'd tow a vehicle using a chain thru a pipe and someone steering it.

It stands for Just Empty Every Pocket. :P The old wagoners ate the gas and don't hold up as well as you'd think they would. We have really bad roads, the coolest ride I ever saw was an old Dodge Power wagon from the fifties. It would pull Jesus off the cross.

This is average, Norwegian road standard:

Roads like this typically have a 50 mph speed limit, though. :P The cars typically have significant chassis damage after only a few years.

:D Look like one of the state highways here. But not the tourist one, they keep it in good shape.
We have lots of dirt roads here, with low water bridges that can get water over the top of a car at times, plus the roads fall in and sometimes there are slides when we get heavy rains, after the snow melts, mud. The worst is the mud where there is shale,it's like oil when it's wet
This year the worst was ice,we keep getting more and more ice.As a kid ice storms were rare, now they are regular. You need chains or studded tires for that.Even a four wheel drive is useless, and the heavier they are,the faster they will slide.
That road looks like it would be hell on the struts.

If you use chains over the mountain here, they'll often break. :) Modern tire socks are an excellent alternative.

A tire sock?Chains do wear out,and you have to take them off on pavement or they get ate up quick.Do you have to take the tire sock off on pavement? Not only are the roads bad ,there is a thorn tree here,a type of Acacia I think,it will go thru a ten ply tire.
I wonder if we even have tire socks here,I should clue them in at the feed store.

The sock handles hard surfaces well, and you can drive short distances on pavement with the socks on. :) They can also handle higher speeds than chains.

:D I'm not as good looking as her,but that tire sock looks cool.I wonder if they come in different colors?I'm definitely getting some of those for next winter.I got stir crazy here this winter with all the ice,had to drive out to the mailboxes to get the mail, made it up and down the county road ok,but my driveway.... Really steep at first, you have to get a run at it or you'll spin.
It didn't want to go up it,slid down, got stuck,I got out,got unstuck, car heads down the hill with me watching 8O I was sure it was heading for this ravine and I'm not going to chase after it,but my steering wheel was in the right position where it sort of parked itself off the road, luckily the side opposite the ravine. My son pulled me put with his 4x4.I was SO embarrassed.

My mom owned a Jeep a few years ago, and to date it was the worst vehicle we have ever had. My 70's muscle car is better than that piece of crap.

Jeep Cherokees may look nice.but they don't hold up very well. When they first came out lots of families here bought them,I don't see hardly any left here anymore.

Here's one. A bit on the plain side, if you ask me.

I like Sarge from Cars, if that counts. It took me sooo long to find a die cast toy of him, and I was devastated when I heard that Mattel was doing a recall on their Sarge die casts in the summer of 2007 bcuz of some kind of lead traces - I was scared they were actually going to send some kind of SWAT team to come confiscate mine. Thankfully, my Sarge wasn't one of the die casts affected, so he was safe. :D
