Turkey has significant armed forces on the Syrian border, its army is second large in NATO, just after American, and ISIS now can't even retake kurdish city of Kobane what they have to do before invading.

Btw, what does it mean "buying a ticket out of the blue"?

There's an old saying "There always free cheese in a mouse trap.". I still think this guy want to use you as a drug mule. There is a movie that came out in the 70's called "Midnight Express" that's about a guy that became a drug mule in Turkey, got caught and went to a Turkish prison.

Turkey is a thriving tourist destination. No more dangerous per se than Cancun. Though it borders two dangerous countries on its southern border.

But it does sound suspicious that someone on the Internet would buy you a ticket to go there "out of the blue". I agree with everyone above who says that it sounds suspicious .

I would say don't do it.

Go to the police and get advise straight from them.
scenario 1) there is something shonky - police need to investigate.
Scenario 2) There is nothing wrong but the advise will help you choose.
Scenario 3) Nobody knows if this is legitimate or not. If you do decide to go, then this is a precaution in case things go badly.

In all three cases - the same advise is good advise. Go to the police, let them know and let them give you advise. Make sure you tell them you are ASD and that you are therefore "more gullible." They will not be upset with you as "wasting their time" in such a circumstance.

As far as the country of Turkey itself, you don't have too much to worry about. It's very safe for tourists The sketchy part for me is that some guy who you "know" on eBay just up and decides to offer you a plane ticket to a foreign country halfway around the world...that throws up all kinds of red flags. That's how you end up in a hole in someone's basement putting the lotion on your skin.

Great, sounds fine then hearing that, you should be okay as long as you stay away from the borders with Syria and such.

Stay in the typical tourist regions and dont forget to visit Istanbul. Turkey is a real big country, so while they may have some areas to avoid, other areas are as well well known nice tourist destinations for europeans.

When someone buys a present for someone, they usually buy what that person would want----NOT what they want them to have!! IOW, I'm sticking with my original post..... Did you ever tell this guy that you wanted to go to Turkey? The fact that you've known him for years, might not mean anything, IMO----I've always heard that pedophiles, for instance, will spend YEARS "grooming" their prey----NOT that this guy is a pedophile----BUT, what if he wants to use you to transport drugs, or something? Was he all accommodating, and offered to take you to the airport, as well? Perfect time to slip those drugs, or whatever, right on in there!!

Also, this guy's Arab----Turkey's Arab----are YOU Arab? Well then, why would he think you'd wanna go? I've been there----there's absolutely nothing there----the only thing you get out of going there, is the right to say "I've been there"! !

This thread doesn't belong in GAD, it has nothing to do with general autism issues, and the title question is so ill-defined that it is relatively pointless. It is also over a year old and there is no point in continuing this discussion.

Return the ticket and stay home.
