Desert island would suggest there is little in the way of edible plant life, save for maybe coconuts, and probably little to no ground creatures to hunt. Your food and water would have to come from the ocean.

So firstly has to be a solar still. Or if possible, a distillery set up, depending on where you draw the line with what constitutes one item. This takes care of your drinking water.

Secondly I'd take a huge bottle of high quality bug repellant. I've watched way too many of those survival shows, and insect bites always seem to be one of the biggest obstacles in hot climates.

Naturally you always need a tool. So I'd take a machete.

I'm assuming I can wear the clothes on my back and shoes on my feet. If so I'd try to cheat the game by changing out my shoelaces for parachute cord and wear two belts. Two shirts too.

-One of those portable, fully stocked, solar powered, comm-linked, self-contained-RV-without-wheels habitation boxes the Army & NASA uses.
-My family.
-Copy of the contract to be picked up at a set future time.

That's how they power the Curiosity rover on Mars and New Horizons probe that visited Pluto, only they use <plutonium> to provide the heat instead of camp stove gas. I did a DIY demo unit in the early 2000's using a Peltier (thermoelectric) CPU cooler & voltage step-down circuit. Fun, but inefficient. Luckily with a camp stove's ample heat differential efficiency doesn't matter. Looks like a really fun product!

Did you notice this was a wood-burning product? To me that's the coolest part. In this context, wood is readily available, whereas gas, or anything other than solar would not be helpful. But to turn sticks from the ground into useable power is pretty cool for 130 bucks. I bet it's very light too.

I did not notice the fuel source. That is pretty cool indeed. A perfect counterpart to a small solar panel. Now I want one, if only for our earthquake / emergency stuff.

You are going to visit a deserted desert island, but you can only take 3 things. What would you take ?
Remember there is no electricity or internet on the island.
Have fun.

A boat, a fishing pool, and a lifetime supply of water.

A machete, a large magnifying glass, and a cooking pot.

I had to dig-out a creative writing piece from my PC backup hard-drive to post here.

We had to write as much as possible (on-the-fly) in a three-minute time-frame and yield readable text.

As follows:

On a deserted island: When I first heard this as a topic (where a person is allowed five items to bring to the island for a six-month stay (food and lodging is provided)) two things came to mind; important stories of lone castaways stranded on islands involuntarily attempting to survive.

Five items brought: Foods from home, a portable computer with files, games (Internet connection available; but not mandatory), and a couple of books. Parts of my relaxation will be spent wondering why I couldn’t get enough of a comedy television series, about seven stranded castaways, as a kid.

Old car door... If it gets too hot, I just wind down the window.
