"Alki" is a Chinook word, meaning, approximately, "By and by", with a connotation of, "What's the rush?" It was first proposed as a state motto by some of the settlers of Seattle, who thought that one, day, alki, Seattle would become "the New York of the Northwest". Sadly, I'm starting to think they were right...
