Also, I watched that Togepi episode of Pokemon sometime in the sunmer, and have remained with it ever since. I stopped watching the anime a long time ago, but have been following the games as best as I could.

I loved Togepi. I got a plushie of her for my 9th birthday which was just out of the range of this topic. I also got a giant Meowth that still looks over my bedroom :)

1999 was technically one of my favourite years of my life. I was only 8-9 years old, but it was still a good year because I was rather happy at school, wasn't lonely, went away with family for a week in the summer and had a lovely time, got our kittens (which are old cats now but still with us), was old enough to walk to the park without an adult but still young enough to play and be yourself, and all the build-up to the millennium was exciting. And it was the year I found out Santa wasn't real (I found out in the summer). But that didn't traumatize me.

Yeah, '99 was a good year.

I remember the hysteria surrounding Y2K.

All because dates/years had to be converted from 2 digits to 4 digits.

I remember the much-publicized Y2K bug and how we were all hopelessly doomed because every computer in the world would think it was 1900. And of course, Jesus was supposed to show up and the rapture would begin, where everyone who was Christian, hated science and technology and didn't choose to be gay would be taken to heaven. On New Year's Eve the home I was living in at the time filled all the sinks and bathtubs full of water in case of Y2K-related emergency, even though the staff didn't really feel they needed to do this anymore.

I was in my mid-20's, still not diagnosed with Asperger's, and wouldn't be until 2001. The home was living in was for people with severe mental illness, mostly schizophrenia, but the staff believed my odd behavior, poor coping skills and lack of desire to socialize were all leaned behaviors. I had developed severe insomnia and anxiety. Sometimes I wish I could sue them for their biased treatment, allowing the other residents to do basically whatever they wanted while I could not, and for forcing me to do things that made my anxiety and meltdowns worse instead of better. But that was a long time ago and it would never work, anyway.

It will happen again but its largely unix related this time and 32-bit will probably be gone by then but it could effect embedded systems running Unix/Linux. We still use 8-bit stuff in the embedded world. But it probably won't matter if say, a car computer or a refrigerator, thinks its 01-01-1970 and that assuming its not running some OS that is more real time then Unix/Linux anyway.

I also remember 1999. I was trying to get back into the workforce. I was also getting over my breakdown that I had the previous year in 1998. I remember going to see Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

My daughter was born in 1999 and we had a crappy computer, so we were not too worried about the year 2000 bug.

I wish I had gotten in on pokemon sooner, but I did not get my first gameboy until Crystal.

I was in high school at that time. We went on a trip to Mexico and upon return we tried a feature at the film lab at Thrifty drugstore where they'd put your pics on a 3.5" floppy disc. That was pretty awesome because then I didn't have to scan all the film prints. 640x480 resolution none the less! We had a digital camera but I can't remember why we didn't bring it.

Saw The Green Mile & The Matrix at the theater.
Every one was talking about The Matrix and how great the sequels would be.
I watched The Drew Carey Show and Who wants to be a Millionaire on tv.

Music was Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Blink 182, Kid Rock, and Marilyn Manson.

Mailboxes were full of AOL CD-ROMs and the supermarket would drop a disk in the bag with every purchase.

I saved up my money so I could buy a nice VCR for $200. I also saved up for a portable cd-player. Back then having one was a part of high school experience. And people competed to have the best anti-skip protection.
Enjoyed playing MediEvil and Syphon Filter on playstation.

All in all it was a good year. The Y2K fear made it even more exciting!

Groovy.

I probably would have seen that at the pictures, I loved what I'd seen in the adverts. I have a vague memory of wondering what "shagged" meant :D It was a 12 IIRC so I couldn't see it because 12 didn't become 12A for cinema until 2002. Got to see my first 12A film when I was 11 :D

I don't remember a lot about 1999, except that I was in my last year of junior high school and I was looking forward to finally being in senior high school next year. It was the first of three years that I spent with the maths teacher who eventually became my favourite teacher in high school. I also won a national essay contest, but I didn't collect the prize until the following year. I think it was also the year of songs like "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin and "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega. Make of that what you will. :P I remember watching "The Matrix" as well and thinking it was the coolest movie since "Independence Day".

One thing I do remember was that everyone was either excited about "the new millennium" or worried about the Y2K bug crashing all of civilisation. We were assured that most computers weren't going to be affected by the problem, but that didn't stop my father from filling up our bath tub just in case the water supply ran out. I think the local council put out a water truck on a nearby street in case it happened. But nope, aside from a few minor amusing incidents, there was no catastrophic end of the world and everything carried on as normal. We kept on watching the New Years celebrations in Sydney on TV as midnight rolled past, thankful that nothing had gone wrong. They were really pretty that year with the Chinese lanterns on the harbour.

I was incredibly obsessed with troll dolls, virtual pets, and Disney. But I could not understand the popularity of Beanie Babies and thought they were dumb. People going out to buy a few hundred of them because they supposedly would sell for millions of dollars, but in the end they weren't worth "beans", if you pardon the pun.

I also couldn't figure out why they were selling plush toys of the Y2K bug. A cute and cuddly version of something that was supposed to kill everybody. But then again, they now have cute adorable plushies of deadly viruses and bacteria, and people are flocking to stores and saying, "I want Ebola! Give me rabies!"

Speaking of Ebola... never mind.

1999 was the last whole year I had two turtles. I enjoyed them and took them for walks, as well as my dog. My grandfather was still well enough to get around. I also enjoyed, thought about and fantasized about my obsession at the time, and had a girl crush on someone connected to said obsession.
