I don't remember a lot about 1999, except that I was in my last year of junior high school and I was looking forward to finally being in senior high school next year. It was the first of three years that I spent with the maths teacher who eventually became my favourite teacher in high school. I also won a national essay contest, but I didn't collect the prize until the following year. I think it was also the year of songs like "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin and "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega. Make of that what you will. I remember watching "The Matrix" as well and thinking it was the coolest movie since "Independence Day".
One thing I do remember was that everyone was either excited about "the new millennium" or worried about the Y2K bug crashing all of civilisation. We were assured that most computers weren't going to be affected by the problem, but that didn't stop my father from filling up our bath tub just in case the water supply ran out. I think the local council put out a water truck on a nearby street in case it happened. But nope, aside from a few minor amusing incidents, there was no catastrophic end of the world and everything carried on as normal. We kept on watching the New Years celebrations in Sydney on TV as midnight rolled past, thankful that nothing had gone wrong. They were really pretty that year with the Chinese lanterns on the harbour.

Night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide;
But to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air –
There's the rub, the task.
