Why do most males walk away from situations but others feel inclined to bring the situation to a violent conclusion?

Mental problems? It could also be that some men answer to any kind of disagreements or trouble with violence simply because that's the way that stuck to them in childhood (violent parents, teachers etc.) These men might even know in theory that it is wrong, but when they end up in a bad situation the mannerisms they learned as children come to surface.

If it were upbringing alone, we would expect the rate of violent men to be the same as violwnt women. If it were upbringing with social gender constructs that hold males should be more violent or that it's ok for them to be, we would expect men to commit physical violence at double the rate of women. But men commit physical violence at rates very significantly more than twice that of women.

Well yeah, maybe not upbringing alone, but growing up in a violent enviroment probably does raise the chances that the person will become violent as an adult. If he (or she) also has mental problems then it's probably even more likely. As for the difference between men and women, well, you said it yourself. At least I can't think of a better explanation.
