It should be "I'm proud to be in America where at least I know I'm free".
I agree somewhat. You could also say that Americans by the fact that they are Americans are in America. You could also say that using American to refer to citizens of the United States is incorrect because of the countries of Central and South America not being a part of the United States nor Canada. Also it's a song so song freedoms.
The Human Freedom Index of 2017 reports That the United States ranks 17th in freedoms. Of course this could be questioned but I think it's considered a pretty good try. Human Freedom Index
1 Switzerland 2 Hong Kong 3 New Zealand 4 Ireland 5 Australia 6 Finland 7 Norway 8 Denmark 9 Netherlands 10 United Kingdom 11 Canada 12 Austria 13 Sweden 14 Estonia 15 Luxembourg 16 Germany 17 United States 18 Taiwan 18 Singapore 18 Lithuania

"If tomorrow all the things were gone "I worked for all my life And I had to start again With just my children and my wife... "the flag still stands for freedom And they can't take that..."
The flag or the freedom for which it stands?
"...away."
In any case, first some related points to ponder:
"If one holds to the worldview shared by the founders of the U.S., freedom is the God-given right of all men... "Governments [and their warriors] don't grant freedoms. By nature they regulate and restrict them." (emphasis added) https://www.quora.com/Is-freedom-a-right-or-privilege
I think it would be interesting to hear what Greenwood might have to say about his early-90s thoughts behind that song. Nevertheless, and with or without being flag-wavers: Let us all stand for the freedom of all.

As far as Canadians being as free as Americans goes, in Canada there is no freedom of speech nor is there freedom of the press.
Canada’s Charter of Rights guarantees freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
Canada has these wonderful things called Human Rights Tribunals where people don't have the right to face their accusers and can't even comment on the decisions of these kangaroo courts. This is not freedom.
