I guess people like that are literally too dumb to live. Natural selection will sort things out.

Although I do feel bad for the kids whose parents are too stupid or in denial to go somewhere safe. :(

I'm from Louisiana & we get more than our fair share of hurricanes. We never evacuated for one but my parents house is brick, has shutters & is a bit above sea level. We also never had mandatory evacuations either, just voluntary 1s. We almost evacuated for one thou but it changed direction slightly while when we were almost ready to leave & my mom had a breakdown cuz she saw all the stuff in the freezer that we would lose. They have 3 freezers & a fridge with a freezer & they also have a generator. We were able to keep most of the food.

My husband told me he saw one interview on TV where a woman couldn't evacuate because she didn't have the money to. No money for gas and no extra money for food and water. I felt bad for her and realize how privileged we are. We have savings and credit card and army food and a place in Montana we can stay at for free.

Katrina. Many, many people could not afford to leave. Far too many of them did not survive.

So there were bad storm surges and of course there's no power there now, and the folks who didn't leave are being evacuated by first responders, from what I'm seeing. Some casualties, sadly.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought maybe Fnord was constipated. :D

My pet peeve in these storm stories is people who disregard a mandatory evacuation order, then get rescued by first responders. Now I realize in some cases, people are unable to leave, financially or because they are in a nursing home, etc. But I'm talking about the prideful ones who act nonchalant and "we're going to hunker down and ride it out."

Does the word "hunker" have any other meaning besides in the context of riding out storms? I virtually never hear it any other time.

I heard the word Hunker being used in similar sayings by people in bomb shelters in some shows. Might be older shows.

No, lady; normal people get themselves and their kids out of danger.

Who else is willing to bet that they don't survive the storm?

I've never understood why some insist on staying for hurricanes when they have the means to evacuate. I think many underestimate the force of mother nature.

This is neither here nor there but I just realized the title of this thread could be misconstrued as being a discussion about constipation.
