Terrified-no
Irritated-yes, because they go off at inopportune times, like 3 a.m.

Terrified isn't the word, but I do get startled and dislike the noise. I'm personally very sensitive to loud noises. I understand they are necessary, a necessary evil when it comes to that horrible infernal beeping screech.

I become extra mindful of the smoke alarm when I'm cooking; that is I run the stove-fan on 'HIGH' in order to pull any smoke out of the kitchen as fast as possible, and away from the smoke alarm.

I should not of posted in this thread cuz with my sh!tty luck we started having a problem with one this morning maybe cuz I posted here. We were downstairs & one started beeping/chirping every couple minutes like others had when they were going bad. At 1st I thought it was maybe something outside or the neighbors alarm but after a couple beeps I decided to check to see if it was one of ours. I knew it wasn't the one in the living-room because we were in there & it wasn't loud enough. I climbed to the top of the stairs cuz we have 3 upstairs(one in each bedroom & one at the top of the stairs even thou they are all near each other in a straight line. The beeping sounded fainter so I ruled out those. I then went in our basement & sure enough it was that one. Our basement ceiling is low so I was able to reach the alarm without standing on anything. I had a hard time getting the battery compartment opened cuz it opened differently than others I had fooled with in the past. I unscrewed the alarm so I could maneuver it more & check things out better. I didn't unplug it thou. I quickly figured out how to open the battery compartment after that but I needed alittle tool to pry em out. In the past we had a couple alarms do the beeping until the batteries were out because the alarms wouldn't detect the main power(the electricity) because something in the alarm was going bad. I climbed back up to our living-room to get a tool & I grabbed two double-A batteries since that what it took just in case the problem was the batteries. I got the batteries that were in there out & it was still beeping. I then put the new 1s in & it still beeped. I then took the new batteries out & tried to unplug the alarm. The plug was very tight & I was afraid I would break it but I couldn't find any snap or anything to push/pull so I could remove it. I kept pulling since that seemed like the only way to get it off & it came off after a bit of work & quit beeping. I was planning to call maintenance tomorrow but my girlfriend suggested at some point that there might be a reset button I need to press after putting new batteries in. That happened with her parents 1ce. I know there's a test button that also stops the alarms from going off temporarily when there's some kinda problem but I didn't know there was also a reset button to press too. I'll have to examine the alarm at some point. Knowing my luck there will be a reset button & I'll go through the process of hooking the alarm back up with new batteries in it & then resetting it only for the alarm to still beep because the problem is that the alarm is cr@pping out & then I'll have to take it back down again. Dealing with maintenance is a pain to thou cuz they just show up whenever the f#ck they feel like instead of giving us the required 48 hours notice since this is kinda a safety hazard. The most they'll likely do is call the morning before they show up & I'll have to make sure I'm around even if we had other plans. The may show up the next day or over a week later. I guess I'll examine the alarm before deciding if I'll try to reset button or now. I F#CKING HATE HAVING THESE CONSTANTLY MALFUNCTIONING PIECES OF CR@P

I'm not afraid of them per se, but they always startle me so badly that I'm still shaking from it half an hour later.

When I was 21 (it was a very good year...not), I lived in a group home, and one night, not long after I had moved in, when were all asleep the smoke alarm went off although there was no fire, I have no idea who or what set it off. I was barely aware of what I was doing, I just leaped out of bed and was rushing down the fire escape. Actually everyone else thought there was a fire, too. When the staff told us there was no fire we were not very pleased. Most of the residents had severe schizophrenia and other mental illness and some of them were nearly on the verge of a heart attack by what just happened. But I remember just taking a bath to help myself relax and went back to bed. I did get some praise for reacting so quickly.

Yes, I hate the sound. Ours are all unplugged, or whatever. I just pray there's no fire.
