Around where I live they are all changing to paid toilets. It is horrible. The worst thing is that those on drugs go in but don't lock the door, so we put the money in but the door doesn't open (They hold it shut from the inside) and we lose our money, so we try the next loo, and find rhe next loo another druggie is in there and so on... And me without having an income, my coins are very valueable to me... And due to nurves I also drink a lot of water, so need the loo often... So as I am not classed as dissabled, I don't habe a dissabled toilet door key, so I habe nowhere to go to use the loo in thw areas where the druggies are, which ironically are opposite the police station, and the police can't do anything as it is a council issue... And the council say it is a police issue...The drug dealers have taken over the loos! When they were free it never happened.

What a horrible situation, Mountain Goat! Sounds like a nightmare. All of my worst dreams, from a gross-out perspective, involve public restrooms. That sounds like a waking nightmare.

I hear you can buy them on ebay and you can use those disabled restrooms. Blame the country and the druggies.

I am not on ebay, and I would never buy one without having one from an official source.

I was thinking it had to do with restrooms having combination locks and not being able to get the combination number unless one is a customer.

There have been a couple of times at a place I eat at downtown were someone wanted to get into the restroom, were told customers only, and they got very upset.

The reason for the combination locks is to keep the ever growing number of junkies from using the restrooms to shoot up. They sometimes leave syringes and blood in their wake. Some homeless people also use and tie up the restrooms to bathe and change their clothes and sometimes leve a mess.

I'm impressed you got that out of that post. I am still confused by the original post.

We have many public toilets in Australia, but I'd rather use a toilet in McDonald's etc. and make a small purchase because private rest rooms tend to be a lot cleaner.

You can buy RADAR keys on Amazon. If you are registered disabled you can claim back the VAT on them, otherwise you can just buy one anyway. Don't buy the absolute cheapest... they break.

Go in the bushes... In my first apartment, I knew someone who had to ask a neighbor to use their bathroom for at least a month because the maintenance people at that place were so slow.

I grew up in the boonies and doing it in the bushes never bothered me.

This thread reminds me of this story my dad who was a long haul truck driver used to tell. In the 70's or 80's maybe 90's, there was a trucker's strike where the owners of the truckers' union decided to make the truckers pay to use the toilets in the trucker's stops. This went "well". They went in the bathroom, but not exactly in the toilet. The cleanup crew had to clean human urine and feces off of every surface except the toilets. The truckers' union people decided they didn't have to pay anymore.

I am not dissabled.

If I am caught using one without being classed as dissabled I would be in trouble.

San Fransisco installed several paid toilets, then the local merchants closed their restrooms to the public. Now people just go on the sidewalk! Progress, got to love it!

Wait, they had like a lock on the toilet? You had to put money in for the seat to unlock? I was thinking the restroom door was locked and you had to put change in to unlock it.

How are they going to know you are not disabled? Not every disability is visible. Are they going to demand you have medical proof? Guess what? No one carries their diagnoses papers with them.

This just shows how paid restrooms are not the answer.

As much as I don't particularly enjoy having to use public washrooms, at least I don't have to pay to use them. That's just plain evil, man! And I can't imagine what it's like for people with kids. Little kids are always having some kind of potty emergency, often suddenly and without warning.

When I was very young, however, I was so terrified of public toilets that I preferred peeing outside in the grass than going in one.

Go to a department store, pretend you're intending on buying something but don't actually waste your money.

My dad used to get really cross about it because he's been on benefits most of his life. This (or McDonalds) was the solution.

I recommend McDonalds either if you're hungry (doesn't cost that much and generally aspie friendly food) or if you go during a lunch period when it's busy - they can't notice everyone. Don't even waste a small amount if you don't want the food. Esp considering most toilets only cost about 10p so you'd be spending more money than if you'd just gone to a paid toilet for essentially the same 'service'.
