I don’t think the dog bringing me a dead groundhog counts.

A dead groundhog would be quite a delicacy when compared to the salmonella salons we have around here.

I can't remember when I last had a takeaway... around 1987 I think.

It was a fresh one,she had just killed it.At one time in the Ozarks it would have went in the pot and it’s hide made into shoe strings or a banjo skin.

Banjo skin I can relate to. From my banjo-playing days some die-hards would use goatskin, but it was a bit temperamental with temperature/humidity changes.

There used to be a goat that hung around the swimming hole here,a big white one.We used to feed it cigarettes( nonfilter). I guess it got hooked because it started getting aggressive to people. One of the hippies killed it and made a drum out of its skin.

Great thread derailing, from takeaways to goat-killing hippies

Maybe I can bring it back... curried goat is a bit of a fave in Caribbean takeaways...

Careful, you could get addicted to nicotine if you eat that goat!

... and I've just had a weird vision of a load of hippies banging a goatskin drum while mopping up the last bits of goat gravy around a huge fire.

Here in the US, "takeaway" is usually referred to as "to go."

As in----do you want to eat this burger in here? Or do you want it "to go?"

Also: It's more expensive to "eat in" in the UK than it is to "takeaway." This is not true in the US.

I always thought "To Go" here meant that you go to the place & buy it & bring it somewhere else to eat it. For example you'd go to a drive-through window & eat in in your car or you'd bring it home or wherever. That usually costs the same as eating it at the place. I got the impression from this thread that Takeaway was when you'd order food & have the place bring it to you. That's what I'd call having the food delivered like when I order pizza online & Domino's delivers it to our apartment. It does usually cost more to have the food delivered cuz there's delivery fees & your expected to tip the driver. However it is sometimes cheaper to order some pizza online than going to the place to order it cuz some places offer special online deals or coupons on the site.

I’m sure that’s exactly how it went down. They lived in an old pre-civil war house by the river.Lots of weird stuff happened at the Jack Pot hole.Sadly the old house was torn down last year.
The area used to have loads of hippies, they rode horses thru the woods nekkid and horrified the natives. Now they have grown up, moved away and became bankers and lawyers.

I do know that, in the UK, "takeaway" means you go into a restaurant, order food, then "take it away."

Perhaps it also means what you say as well.

We have a lot of hippies here. They do like banging drums around huge fires in the hills. Here they don't move away, they just turn into old hippies.

Just one fish and chip shop and one Chinese takeaway in my village. Never really been a great fan of most takeaways but I do like a good, unhealthy, fish and chips dinner or supper at times. The chips must be big fat thick cut things, not pathetic French fry stringy things. Salt and vinegar are the only acceptable accompaniments. My local village chippie is rather good.

A few hippies dug in and made it here, most left to make a living. One year the Rainbow Family showed up.They brought their own takeout.I walked down to the gathering,it was interesting to say the least.Gave the locals something to talk about for years.

well kind of inasmuch as you can order food to take away from most restaurants but usually what is meant by 'takeaway' in the UK is food from a place that has no restaurant eat-in facility (other than a few basic tables and seats which most people don't generally use) and where the expectation is that you will carry the food away from the premises to eat it and that that is the main aim of the establishment. Almost without exception ( or they would soon be out of business) these places also have delivery options.

That's true. I noticed that, too.

We have those sorts of places, too. Very few places to sit. No waiters. We call them "takeout" places. But we never say "takeout," for some reason. We always say we want the food "to go."
