Ach, don’t be too harsh.
A bit of harmless superstition to give life meaning seems to be good for most people (no idea why meaning is a good thing for them, but apparently this is the case).
I’d be more worried about self-conscious charlatans out to exploit the believers in this sort of thing.

Hey! I resent that!

I am not at all self-conscious...

Find some 100-year old books in foreign languages to put on display. Add a few dreamcatchers and leave a bowl of polished stones nearby. Don't forget to light some scented candles. Offer the clients some "imported herbal tea" which you can find in any grocery store. Play some Enya music in the background. Make sure that there is a cat in the room, and talk to it as if it could understand you.

Finally, claim to NOT be psychic, but only sensitive to the voices of the Spirits, which are often difficult to understand due to "dark forces" nearby.

Works every time.

Don’t forget to throw in some random phrases in Latin/Sanskrit/Hebrew: there are standards to live down to.

A little high-school French is good enough, if you also tell them that you "learnt de cards" from your "raven-haired tante in de back o de bayou", mon ami!

 N'cest pas?

If it's just believing in random woo woo because it makes them feel good, I'm happy to leave them to it. It gets a bit more alarming watching them waste oodles of money on things like instructions in Craniosacral therapy and homeopathy and, as I heard from a co-worker just today, someone who claims to be able to speak with animals and relay their thoughts and feelings (for a fee). Not an animal behaviour expert, mind, but more like a mind reader.

A seeker and his money are soon parted, and there is a seeker born every minute.

Ah, yes, of course: this side of the Atlantic claiming gypsy descent would be the one to go for...

Are they called “seekers” in the trade: or is it the more honest “marks”?

According to Phineas T. Burnham, it is.

Of course: at least do your victims the courtesy of being a professional shyster.

Certainly. Even when your job is to kill the Thanksgiving turkey, it never hurts anyone to say nice things to it.

Psychic: having a special mental ability, for example so that you are able to know what will happen in the future or know what people are thinking: psychic powers.

I guess to answer the question it's important to first define "psychic". ^

By definition, "psychic" doesn't suggest there are any supernatural forces at play, but rather a special ability.

Sure, some people have a special ability. It could be attributable to a highly developed limbic system which can sense energy and make very accurate predictions. It could just be a higher rate of coincidence for these people, it could be "good guessing", and it could be that their minds have an ability that others' don't.

Time and space don't exist, so I think some people are able to see / think past those implied constraints.

In short, sure some people are highly accurate at guessing (knowing?) the future, or being able to perceive what others think. I'm not suggesting it's necessarily supernatural but yes, some people are better at these skills than others.

Brilliant ^^

I know an Indian lady like that (from New Delhi not apache), she sees the past and the future. She is accurate in all she says. Not a charletan, a psychologist actually....( I know, I know)

@Fnord

I wasn't there with my mum but she's not the sort to lie or exaggerate. She said she got emotional in the session. And my mum never believed in psychics.

What I explained was only a tiny, vague fraction of what was really said, as I don't want to give away all my mother's life details online. But I could PM you more about it, as it's rather interesting.

The psychic she saw was the talking to the dead type, and it didn't start off with a simple question like "is there a John?" or something, and even if she did it would have been wrong for a start because my mum literally has no Johns in her family and knows nobody else called John. So her first statement (wasn't even a question) was a fantastic guess, which I'll tell you in a PM if you'd like.
