I disagree.
I see it as being defiant in the face of adversity.

Which is terribly disrespectful... to the grim reaper.

In the beginning of the pandemic, my husband tinkered himself a raven beak :D
I find the printed mask street fashion healthy. It helps coping with the situation in a bit more cheerful way.

That's what I was thinking. Encouraging it to be a trend a fad people will want to be a part of.

I really don't see how it could be offensive, unless the picture or text in them is offensive, like someone flipping a middle finger or something. I've heard some people, especially teenagers and young adults, say that they don't want to wear masks because the masks are ugly. Solution? Make the masks non-ugly! ...Or teach those people that sometimes practicality should top beauty, but let's be honest, changing the masks is easier than changing the people. Besides, no one's forced to buy those styled ones, they can just buy, or even make, the plain ones if they want to. But if you gotta buy or make a mask anyway, why not make it look pleasant?

I see it as people wanting to claw back some sense of control. If the situation means they have to wear a mask, they at least want to feel they can inject a degree of personalization, or perhaps even defiant levity, into what is potentially a very serious issue.

I can't really blame them. It's a combination of fear, bravado, and even an attempt to show others that there is room for individuality and creativity in the middle of adversity. I can even see it as overlapping the edges of neurodiversity a little - there are going to be people who, for whatever reason, find it very difficult to wear a standard mask even if they recognize the need, but may feel more able to wear a more customized one. In their case, stylizing a mask may be practically necessary.

Stylizing masks? No... That's the least of our worries here. In fact styled masks are already here long before the pandemic.

It's usually in a form of an accessory of motorcycle drivers, and there are a lot of motor tricycle drivers here.
So people here... Are more than used with the idea of clothed masks with any patterns plastered on anyone's faces.

Here's the real worry of opportunists here instead; on the internet, there's exists this faceshield mask supplier scam.
But then previously there are already scams concerning mask supplies, alchohol, etc.

And now the gadget scams concerning online classes.
Speaking of concerns of online classes, this season's opportunists consists of people who can answer student modules for a price.

Yep -- profitable academic prowess.
It preys on lazy and students who cannot keep up for a price. But it's not to say it's entirely the students and opportunist's fault.

More like the education system here along with other infrastructures involved aren't ready for it.

Now I'm just starting to derail.

TLDR;
Fussing about the masks here is basically the least of worries.

No, I don't see a problem with it. We all have to wear masks now so they might as well make all sorts of colours etc. And I think stylizing masks is actually encouraging more people to want to wear them.

If people started wearing t-shirts with COVID jokes on then it would be highly unnecessary and insensitive. But I don't see a problem with stylizing masks.

9/11 memorabilia came out after the event.

This is more like how they gave kids Mickey Mouse gas masks in world war two. If there had been a gas attack, kids would've enjoyed wearing them and would've stayed safe.

If there's a special day to remember coronavirus when we've got the vaccine and things go back to normal then, yes, I'll see it as pretty poor taste for people to be donning masks on it. But that's not the situation right now.

Right now, we're still in the event. So whatever it takes. And the majority of masks which are customised are just as good as ones that aren't, they just encourage people to wear them cos they have designs on.

Stylized masks? We wear clothes to cover our bodies but we stylize it. We wear footwear to protect our feet but we stylize it. Hair just naturally grows out of our bodies and it often gets stylized. And, just to stylize more people wear jewelry, makeup, tattoos, and piercings. We're going to be wearing masks for a long time, we might as well get used to them, and you might as well stylize it to your own taste. Even medical stuff can be stylized...checkout what choices there are for canes.

If you want to encourage social distancing, there are masks for that, too.

But I think that so many of the masks are not medical grade also shows how they are capitilizing on a tragedy, because they seem to care more about fashion than function.

Does it matter? As long as the material is safe and effective. I like some style to them.
