A lucid dream occurs when a dreamer realizes that they are dreaming and can begin to control the dream. The term was coined by a Dutch psychologist in 1913, but scientific inquiry into this phenomenon did not seriously start until much later.  In 1968, the writer Celia Green began to analyze the characteristics of such dreams.  In the early 1980s, sleep researchers Keith Hearne and Stephen LaBerge independently discovered a method for lucid dreamers to signal their state to observers, proving their awareness during what is supposed to be a sleep phase.  While the phenomenon has been established as real and is being studied as a valid field of sleep research, some New Agers have taken this as a starting point to make wild and unsubstantiated claims about the nature of consciousness, and that it might even be key to unlocking parapsychological powers.  It is important to note that there is no evidence whatsoever that you can use it to unlock any secret powers hidden in your subconsciousness.  Flying and such may work while within the dream, but nobody should expect to gain special powers in real life.

Fnord your post makes absolute sense, and I agree, if lucid dreaming was that powerful, everyone would do it. Sltough, there are some helpful things you cmCAN do. For example, say you built something once, but it wasn't very good. Well, in a lucid dream, since you remember everything you do once you wake up, if you go and build the sanmme thing over and over again, then try it again when you wake up, your probably a little bit better! Of course, in a dream where you can literally become god, most people aren't going to be building birdhouses XD

for people who were not successful in eliciting lucid dreams, what does that failure say about them and their brains?

not being able to intentionally lucid dream says nothing about you! Everyone has there own method of causing them, so maybe the method you were using simply doesn't work for you. Lucid dreaming is also harder if you don't have a constant sleep cycle, or stay up later. You have to experiment, first try lots of different methods, if that doesn't work, try going to bed earlier and more consistently. If even that doesn't work, try adjusting some methods to make then easier for you. Its even possible your brain isn't letting you lucid dream. For people who work all day on hard jobs, I've found lucid dreaming is harder for them, because there subconscious wants then to sleep rather than lucid dream, because lucid dreaming is slightly less restful than actual sleep.

Auntblabby you're welcome! I can't say I'm particarally noliged on the subject, as I lucid dream naturally, so all my methods make lucid dreams more vivid rather than cause them. But YouTube and Google is actually surprisingly helpful on the matter. The best I've found were on wattpad though, so check it out if want!

Another useful thing I found recently, is music that actually helps lucid dreaming! It has geniunly helped me lucid dream more clearly and with more control, so I would recommend trying it, as there is plenty of it on YouTube!
