When I was 8-9, I read a bit about the Sumerian mythology in Zenon Kosidowski's book "The Bible Tales" on the beginnings of judaism and the explanation of all those biblical miracles
It's a great book for a beginner in atheism. It was when the seed was sown. Now, in the next few days, I'll get my book on the Sumerian mythology - and believe me that I'm going to read it "from the plank to the plank" which is a Polish idiom for reading a book thoroughly.

If you'd be interested in the structuralist approach to fairy tales, Propp has discovered 31 functions Russian fairy tales typically have which go in a certain order. There are also 7 typical heroes. By using these functions and heroes, anyone can generate a fairy tale.

Likewise, Claude Levi Strauss has his version of the structuralist approach to myths. He interpreted Oedipus's myth as an interplay of under/overvaluation of blood relations and an affirmation/negation of the chthonic birth.

But to me, the most interesting is the research into the oldest stories by using the phylogenetic method. Some stories can even be traced to the Bronze Age, such as the Smith and the Devil: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/ ... 645#d1e584
