Is Gulf of America official now?

Shameful, given that Trump can only unilaterally rename the 12 mile strip off the coast of American territory.

So, the Gulf of America, if it exists, is only a small portion of the Gulf of Mexico, rather then the entirety of the Gulf of Mexico.

Why does Trump think it's important for the US not to call it The Gulf of Mexico like the rest of the world?

No. He'll decide the Mexicans are illegal immigrants in Mexico.

Remember: a large portion of the southern US, including California and Texas, used be part of Mexico. Yet, its not like Trump and his goons are okay with Mexicans living there.
